Baseball Falls to PSAC Foe Seton Hill on the Road

GREENSBURG, Pa. - Traveling to Greensburg for a single nine inning game tilt against PSAC West foe Seton Hill, the Clarion baseball team fell by a final score of 14-6. The loss moves the Golden Eagles to an early 0-3 overall on the season, while the Griffins improve to a perfect 4-0.

Clarion will have a little over 24 hours to try and bounce back as they travel to Washington, Pa. on Saturday, March 13th, to take on Cal U and Millersville in single nine inning games. First pitch of the Cal U game is slated for 1 pm with the Millersville game to follow.

After Alex Ficorilli doubled to left center on a 1-1 fastball, senior catcher Thomas Lavin proved to be the accelerator to the Clarion offense once again starting the top of the first inning off with a two run homer to left field.

Lavin followed that up with another homer, his third of the season, in the top of the third inning, again clearing the left field fence at the Dick's Sporting Goods Sports Complex to put Clarion ahead with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Things remained stagnant at 3-0 until the top of the fifth inning when Ficorilli leadoff the inning with a single to right centerfield, Lavin singled through the right side to put two runners on base.

Danny Fox joined the homerun parade with his first of the year, sending a three run shot down the left field line giving the blue and gold a comfortable 6-0 lead, but in a nine inning barn burner the lead was never safe.

Seton Hill tallied two runs in the bottom frame of the fifth thanks to a fielder's choice that scored Sabol who was hit by a pitch in the early part of the inning and Pellis scored on a throwing error on the Golden Eagle defense making the score 6-2.

The Griffins evened the game at six a piece in the bottom of the sixth when a single to right center field score one and a three run homer to left field cleared the bases making it 6-6 halfway through the game.

Holding strong, Clarion was able to blank the Griffins in the seventh inning but the eighth inning proved to be too much to overcome as Seton Hill scored eight runs on three hits, while stranding two baserunners to take the lead and make the score 14-6.

Bonzo, the Seton Hill closer, shut the door on the Golden Eagles attack in the top of the ninth inning earning two flyouts to right field and a strikeout to end the game.

Lavin led the Clarion attack going three for four with two homers and three RBI's, while Ficorilli was able to pick up two hits on four plate appearances. Fox picked up three RBI's with one swing of the bat and added one more hit going two for three on the afternoon.

Dereck Pritchard got the nod on the bump for head coach Doc Neiman, tossing 4.1 innings allowing one earned run on four hits, while fanning three Griffin batters.
