Softball Brings Fireworks, But Falls Just Short at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Golden Eagle softball team put on an offensive show on Wednesday, but they were unable to hold back the Bloomsburg Huskies in dropping both ends of a road doubleheader. Clarion (3-5, 1-3 PSAC West) fell by a 10-9 score in the early game and a 12-8 mark in the nightcap. The Golden Eagles return to conference action this weekend when they start a four-game series with Cal U on Friday.

Jessica Cartia had a monster day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with 8 RBIs, including a grand slam in the second game to briefly put the Golden Eagles in the lead. In doing so she vaulted ahead of Carlie Cook for the program's all-time record in runs batted in, with 69 RBIs in her career. She highlighted another big offensive day for the Golden Eagles, who combined for 17 runs over the two games. Clarion has scored 42 runs in the last five games, an average of 8.4 runs per game, despite three of those games being called early for darkness. However, the Huskies were able to match the Golden Eagles' offensive firepower with some big bats of their own, rallying from deficits in each contest to sweep the doubleheader.

Game 1 Recap
Clarion seemed poised to get the win in the early game against the Huskies as the Golden Eagles raced out to an 8-0 lead. Cartia drove in the first run of the game on a bases loaded walk, and later lined a two-run single in the second inning to score Carissa Giordano and Brooke Cline. That gave the Golden Eagles a 7-0 edge, one that would expand to eight runs in the third inning when Giordano smacked an RBI triple to score Beka McClymonds.

The Huskies countered by finally breaking through against starter Megan Anderson, touching her up for eight runs in the third inning to tie the score. Kendyl Switzer (1-1) entered in relief and allowed a run to cede a 9-8 advantage to Bloomsburg, though she settled down the rest of the way and pitched effectively until the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, Rebecca Kelley crushed a solo home run over the center field wall to tie the game at 9-9, but the Golden Eagles were unable to muster another run to re-take the lead. Bloomsburg walked it off with a sacrifice fly by Briannah Dobson, scoring Sammi Starr from third base.

Cline finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Kelley went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run score. Cartia drove in three runs total in the first game.

Game 2 Recap
Cartia again put the Golden Eagles in the early lead in Game 2, this time with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Giordano. Bloomsburg had the early advantage in this one, though, scoring five runs off starter Laura Sadowski in the second inning. The Golden Eagles countered in the top of the third, starting with an RBI single from Cline to score Giordano. She came around to score when Alyssa Stitt reached on a fielder's choice and an error, and Kelley brought Stitt home with a liner into center field to cut it to 5-4.

The Huskies rebuilt their advantage in the third inning, making it 7-4, but Cartia delivered her biggest hit of the day in the top of the fourth. Giordano, Cline and Stitt all drew walks to load the bases with one out, followed by Cartia bombing a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam that put Clarion ahead 8-7.

Kelley (1-1) was unable to keep the Huskies down late in the game, though, with Bloomsburg scoring five runs off her in 1.2 innings to take a 12-8 lead that served as the final score.
