WASHINGTON, Pa. - Heading south to take on the Vulcans of Cal U in the backend of a four game series, the Clarion baseball swept the Vulcans on day two, winning by scores of 3-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two. The pair of wins moves Clarion to 7-16 on the year and 5-9 in PSAC West play. Cal U falls to 20-12 overall and 11-9 in conference play.Â
Much like yesterday, it was
Thomas Lavin that found success with the deep ball, jump starting the Clarion offense all afternoon long.Â
Putting the ball in play early, but unable to push a run across the plate, Clarion stranded five base runners in the first two frames of the game before breaking the game open.Â
Lavin put Clarion on the board in the top of the third homering to deep left center field, a part of the ballpark that has slowly become Lavin's hot spot, putting the blue and gold up 1-0.
Alex Ficorilli added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, singling to left center field, scoring
Nate Petke who led the inning off with a single to center field giving Clarion the commanding 2-0 lead.Â
Lauden Conte pulled Cal U back within one run after a homer of his own, but Clarion added one more run in the top of the seventh inning, putting the stamp on the Golden Eagle victory.Â
Lenny Piccini led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a
Emerson Abromavage groundout. After a fielder's choice,
Matt Privette singled to center field scoring
Scott McManamon from third who pinch ran for Piccini pushing the score to its final 3-1.Â
Cal U sent four batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't generate any offense.Â
Bryan Layton went the distance for Clarion tossing a complete game one run, four hit gem, while fanning five Vulcan batters.Â
In game two Clarion struck early in the top of the first adding two runs on two hits, taking the early 2-0 lead and putting the Vulcans on their heels.Â
Privette led the inning off with a single back to the pitcher and later advanced to third on a groundout and a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring postion, Lavin walked to put runners on the corners for outfielder
Daren Byers. Byers took first pitch fastball and drove it to the left center field gap, allowing Lavin and Privette to make their way around the base paths giving Clarion the lead.Â
Cal U added two runs of their own in the bottom of the first on two hits tying the game up and slowing taking back the momentum.Â
Trading baserunners, but no actual runs, Clarion took the lead back for good in the top of the fifth inning picking up one run on two hits, while stranding one runner on the bases.Â
A clutch lead off hitter, Privette led the inning off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Lavin infield single.Â
A sacrifice fly from
Nick Fugh scored Privette from third giving Clarion the lead and ultimately the game at 3-2.Â
Trevor McGee picked up his third win of the season, tossing 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out five Cal U hitters.Â
Bryce Grenet picked up his first save of the season tossing .2 innings of relief, striking out one.Â
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 30 when they host the IUP Crimson Hawks in doubleheader action. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.Â
