Baseball Drops Pair on the Road to Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - Heading north to take on the Gannon Golden Knights, the Clarion baseball team was upended in both games of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon by scores of 7-2 and 3-0. The pair of losses moves the Golden Eagles to 3-12 on the year and 1-5 in PSAC West play, while the Golden Knights improve to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC West.

It was Clarion that grabbed the lead early in game one, scoring the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first inning. Alex Ficorilli started things off with a double to right center field and Thomas Lavin reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to put runners on the corners for the Golden Eagles early.

With Nick Fugh coming to the plate, he was able to draw a walk on a 3-1 pitch and Danny Fox was hit by a pitch to plate Ficorilli giving Clarion the early 1-0 lead.

Heading to the bottom half of the first Gannon answered immediately with four runs after three hits, including a double down the left field line that cleared the bases.

Gannon added one more run in the bottom of the third pushing their lead to 5-1, but Clarion answered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth inning after a Ficorilli single scored Scott McManamon who singled earlier in the inning.

Just like the first inning, Gannon answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth pushing their lead to the final score 7-2.

In game two it was all Gannon as the Golden Knights scored six runs on eight hits and one Clarion error throughout the seven inning stretch, while limiting the Golden Eagles to no runs and just five hits.

Logan Schlegel got the start on the mound, tossing 4.0 innings while surrendering five runs on six hits and striking out four Gannon batters.

Clarion will look to even the series tomorrow when they host Gannon at Memorial Stadium. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 pm.
