Soccer Falls at #16 Edinboro, 3-1

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Golden Eagle soccer team went on the road to take on one of the top teams in the nation, hanging close with 16th-ranked Edinboro but ultimately falling by a 3-1 score.

Clarion held the Fighting Scots scoreless through the first half and beyond, as the Golden Eagle defense stymied the Edinboro attack. Goalkeeper Alex Velez turned all away three shots the Fighting Scots put on net in the first half. It was not until a penalty kick in the early second half that Edinboro began to take the advantage.

The Fighting Scots drew a penalty in the box from Courtni Hamm in the 58th minute, and Brittnie Spithaler made them pay with a goal to make it 1-0. Mary Sinan added another tally less than two minutes later to bump the lead to 2-1.

The Golden Eagles fought back with a goal of their own just a few minutes later. After taking possession near midfield, Kylee Cross dished from the center of the field to find Abby Sullivan streaking down the right side. Sullivan fired from the top of the box to catch keeper Anna Voelker flat-footed, depositing the ball into the lower-left corner of the net in the 62nd minute to make it 2-1.

Edinboro tallied another goal for insurance to make it 3-1, and Voelker repelled the remainder of the Clarion attacks – including a save on Cross – to secure the victory.
