CLARION, Pa. --- A pair of divers officially qualified for the NCAA Championships in March, and the Golden Eagle women's swimming & diving team defeated Gannon 151-110 in Tippin Natatorium on Friday evening.
Â
Competing in the 1-Meter Dive (11 Dives) event for the second straight meet, the duo of
Luna Vejarano and
Alexa Gonczi both hit NCAA qualifying marks for the second time, officially putting them in the pre-qualification meet in Indianapolis in March. Vejarano won the event with a score of 452.40, while Gonczi was just behind her with a mark of 417.53. It will be Gonczi's second trip to the pre-qualification meet and the first for Vejarano.
Â
Vejarano was not done, however, as the freshman broke her third pool record in two competitions with a standout showing in the 3-Meter (6 Dive) event. She posted a score of 290.85 that ranks as the highest ever in the redesigned Tippin Natatorium. Vejarano had records in the 1-Meter (6 Dives) and 1-Meter (11 Dives) events last weekend.
Â
All of that set the stage for an all-around strong day in the pool, as Clarion edged the Golden Knights in the swimming events for the team win. The Golden Eagles had a monumental start to the night, taking both first and second in the 400 Medley Relay. The squad of
Maria Wold, Mandy Dial,
Michaela Hinkson and
Ava Rosely outperformed their line assignment, winning with a time of 4:09.04 from lane two. The quartet of
Stella Chierico,
Jocelyn Buchheit,
Emma Dorsey and
Hannah Greenway came in less than a half-second behind them at 4:09.42, and both finished before Gannon's top unit touched the wall.
Â
The Golden Knights racked up points through the remainder of the early portion of the meet, though, but Clarion soon regained footing.
Emma Dorsey cruised past the field in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:11.20, and Greenway authored a winning 24.41 effort in the 50 Free. In the case of the latter, that was good for her first NCAA qualifying mark of the season. The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on in the 100 Free, with the trio of
Haley Miller, Madelynn Mcteer and
Jordan Kutchak going 1-2-3 for 16 out of 19 team points in the event. All three hit PSAC qualifying marks in the process.
Â
Clarion turned the trick in the next event as well, as
Maria Wold closed out the four-event win streak with a victory in the 200 Back. Once again the Golden Eagles went 1-2-3, with
Joslyn Jurski and Chierico hitting their first PSAC qualifying times of the season in the event. Â
Â
Greenway won her second individual event of the night, hitting a PSAC mark with a time of 59.72 in the 100 Fly, and Wold added another victory with a PSAC-qualifying 2:15.60 in the 200 IM. The 200 Free Relay team of Miller, Mcteer,
Ava Rosely and Greenway closed out the night with the top time, touching the wall in 1:40.00.
