Box Score HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Golden Eagle tennis team concluded their week in Hilton Head with a hard-luck loss on Thursday, falling by a narrow 4-3 margin to Salem in their morning match.
Clarion's after noon match against Albany State, originally set for 4 p.m., was rained out and canceled.
The Golden Eagles started the day with a win in the doubles session, with the duo of
Alayna McGovern and
Josie Beckerleg dominating the No. 2 match for a victory. The pair shut out Salem's Chloe Owens and Miriam Buendia by a 6-0 score. However, the Tigers took the No. 1 doubles match by a 6-0 score themselves, securing the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
From there, the teams split the singles matches contested, with Clarion taking Nos. 3-5 singles to keep it a tight match. McGovern and Beckerleg finished off 2-0 days with wins in their respective singles matches. The former defeated Buendia 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles match, while Beckerleg cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Owens in the No. 4 singles match.
Rounding out the day for the Golden Eagles was
Alyson Fisher, who notched a truly dominant win at No. 5 singles. She beat Jaden Walsh without giving up a game in the process, winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Tigers, though, were able to take the team match with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.
