Swimming & Diving Qualifies Three at NCAA D2 Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Golden Eagle swimming & diving team had three qualifiers survive the pre-qualification meet on Tuesday, officially clinching their spots at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships this week in Greensboro. Two women - Alexa Gonczi and Anna Vogt - and one man - Zach Schering - all hit the marks necessary to compete in the 1m and 3m Dives this week at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Only one of these athletes have competed in an NCAA Championship previously. Vogt was a participant at the 2020 Division II Championships, competing in one event before the remainder of the meet was canceled due to the burgeoning COVID-19 pandemic. For Gonczi and Schering, this represents their first taste of competition against the nation's best on its biggest stage.

Of course, the history of Clarion at the swimming & diving championships is one of the finest legacies for any sport, at any level of collegiate competition. The Golden Eagles have routinely turned out national champions and All-Americans, to the point that the first two diving coaches in program history - Don Leas and Dave Hrovat - have been named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) list of 100 Greatest Swimming & Diving Coaches. Diving coach Heath Calhoun - himself a six-time NCAA All-American and the 2014 national champion in the 3m Dive - enters his first season at the helm of the storied Golden Eagle program.

The championship meet will feature preliminary rounds in the and finals in the evening. The men's events will take place on Wednesday and Friday, featuring the Men's 1m and 3m Dives, respectively. Conversely, the women will compete in the 3m Dive on Thursday and the 1m Dive on Saturday.
