SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Golden Eagle soccer team returned to action after a long layoff on Wednesday afternoon, but Clarion was unable to top a high-scoring Slippery Rock squad as the Rock won by a 4-0 score at James Egli Field.
Clarion had been off for a week since their last contest, a road trip to Edinboro exactly a week ago. While each of their last three games had been low-scoring affairs – no more than a goal was scored for either side, with Clarion picking up a 1-0 win over IUP in that span – tonight's game with the Rock proved different. Slippery Rock scored one goal in the first half but then netted three in the second, setting the final score of 4-0.
Immediately after the Rock scored their first goal of the game,
Taylor Serrano was robbed on an opportunity going against Slippery Rock's Emma Yoder. A lead pass to the right wing hit Serrano in stride, and the freshman carried the ball up before ripping a shot on net. Yoder came out to challenge her and cut down the angle, stopping the rocket for the save.
Marisa Colondrillo had a golden opportunity in the 30
th minute, firing a shot at Yoder that was blocked by a defender on the way to the net. On a fortunate bounce the ball rebounded back to her, and she fired another shot at net that Yoder was again able to stop.
Alayna Wicker headed a ball toward the net off a free kick with less than three minutes remaining in the half but the shot did not get past Yoder as Clarion entered the half down 1-0.
Clarion's best opportunity came early in the second half, with the team trailing 1-0.
Kylee Cross hit a left-footed shot with some english on it, but Yoder tracked it down and dove to her left for the save. From there the Rock controlled the action, scoring three goals in a span of 19 minutes to open up a 4-0 advantage.
