Records Fall for Men's Swimming & Diving at Zippy Invite

AKRON, Ohio --- More records fell, and more NCAA qualifying marks were hit, as the Golden Eagle men's swimming & diving team competed on the second day of the Zippy Invite hosted by Akron.

Clarion wasted no time on Friday, breaking one program record and notching a pair of NCAA B cuts in the morning prelims. The record came courtesy of Connor Cary, who shattered his own program record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:48.80. Less than a second behind him was sophomore Dominic Cortopassi, who touched the wall in a time of 1:49.55. Both of those times easily cleared the NCAA B cut standard of 1:51.15.

That set the stage for yet another record-breaking swim in the Friday night finals. This time it was Cortopassi that set the new standard, with the sophomore breaking Cary's new record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:48.11. Cary was consistent with his previous swim on Friday, finishing in a time of 1:48.86.

Not to be outdone, Cary's performance in the 400 Medley Relay set a new program record for himself and also contributed to the relay team breaking a school record. Cary led off the event in the 100 Back leg and completed it in 49.50, breaking the previous program record of 50.02 set back in 2004. The rest of the team was up to the task as well, finishing in a time of 3:18.24 to break the school record of 3:20.45. In the 50 Free, Prokopec just barely missed an NCAA B cut of his own with a time of 20.67 in the event, while Henry Miller was just behind him at a time of 20.92.

In the diving events, Zach Schering stood out in the 1-Meter dive, winning the event in a field consisting primarily of Division I competition. The multiple-time All-American put up a score of 301.85, putting him 26 points ahead of Cornell's Soodong Kim. Teammate Michael Flamm placed fourth overall, posting a score of 254.65, while Jack Beattie took sixth place with a 248.60.
