CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle women's basketball team fell behind early in their Tuesday afternoon tilt with Kutztown, and unlike the previous night where they nearly came back to topple East Stroudsburg, Clarion ultimately fell by a 78-46 score to the Golden Bears at Tippin Gym.
Â
The offense struggled in the early going with the Golden Bears, as Kutztown raced out to a quick double-digit lead. Even when things started to click for the Golden Eagles – they were outscored by just eight points over the course of the final three quarters, and were in fact even with the Golden Bears in the fourth quarter – the deficit was already too great to overcome.
Â
Alyssa McLellon scored career-high 13 points in just 16 minutes of action, coming off the bench to make a pair of three-pointers and a 7-of-8 performance at the free throw line.
DayLynn Thornton also came off the bench to chip in eight points and a team-high five rebounds.
Â
The Golden Bears scored 16 of the first 18 points of the contest, with
Siara Conley and
Abby Gatesman sinking free throws in the opening quarter.
Dominika Logue hit the Golden Eagles' first big shot of the day, a three-pointer from the wing off a pass from Thornton, at the 7:04 mark of the second quarter. Logue added her second trey of the period at the 5:16 mark and Thornton finished off a bookend play on the next possession, stealing the ball from Naia Pulliam and taking it coast-to-cast for a layup at the 5:07 mark. Kutztown recovered before the end of the half, taking a 48-20 lead into the break.
Â
McLellon went to work late in the third quarter, sinking a couple free throws and making a three-pointer from the corner at the 1:49 mark. The Golden Eagles pushed the deficit back under 40 points with less than a minute to go, with
Sadre'a Rougeau and McLellon making three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 78-44. McLellon made two more free throws down the stretch to finish off her scoring day.
