Baseball Lands Five on CSC Academic All-District List

CLARION, Pa. --- The College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced their 2023 baseball Academic All-District teams on Tuesday. Five members of the Golden Eagles baseball program – Caden Contant, Sam Economy, Nate Petke, Joe Rossi and Kasey Shughart – made the cut and will now go on to the ballot for Academic All-America.
 
To earn Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must possess a grade-point average of 3.50 or better, be at least a sophomore academically as well as in terms of eligibility, and be a starter or important reserve on their team. Each baseball program is capped at five Academic All-District selections.
 
Contant (3.89 – Nutrition & Fitness) led the Golden Eagles in batting average and on-base percentage, and ranked second on the team in OPS. He hit .344 with seven doubles, one triple and 27 RBIs.
 
Economy (3.72– Marketing) split time at first base, starting 25 games over the course of the season. He hit .232 and was a percent 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts.
 
Petke (3.76 – Business Economics) started 36 games for the Golden Eagles primarily at second base. He hit .252 on the year with two doubles and 12 RBIs.
 
Rossi (3.92 – Business Administration) was a key bullpen option for the Golden Eagles in his senior season, making 13 pitching appearances and one start. He finished the year with two saves and 14 strikeouts in 15.0 innings pitched.
 
Shughart (3.57 – Mid Level Education, Social Studies) was the Golden Eagles' starting center fielder in 2023, batting .232 on the year. He was also dangerous on the basepaths, stealing 14 bases on 17 attempts.
