Wrestling Announces 2023-24 Incoming Athletes

CLARION, Pa. --- The Clarion wrestling program announced today its additions to the roster for the 2023-24 season. This year's incoming class of athletes is comprised of 14 total athletes, including 10 incoming freshmen and four transfers.
 
"We're very excited about the group of men we're bringing into the program this year," said head coach Keith Ferraro. "Our entire staff has worked hard to identify athletes that can compete at a high level and carry on the tradition of Golden Eagle wrestling, while also proudly representing our program in the community. This group is going to help us continue to elevate our program."
 
Below is this year's incoming class, broken down into freshmen and transfers and otherwise arranged alphabetically:

Alejandro Herrera-Rondon
Projected Weight: 157
Zelienople, Pa. / Seneca Valley (Oklahoma)
  • Unanimous No. 1-ranked recruit at 152 pounds in 2021 class
  • Three-time AAA state champion in Pennsylvania
  • 175-14 record in high school
  • Went 25-7 in two years at Oklahoma, including a redshirt year as a freshman in 2021-22
  • Notable victories included 2022 major decision over Cleveland State's Marcus Robinson, a two-time national qualifier 
John Meyers
Projected Weight: 285
Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Salem (Seton Hill)
  • Third-place finisher in the state at AAA
  • Went 24-11 in his years as a Griffin, including a 17-3 record in 2022-23
  • Reached the Round of 12 at the NCAA Division II nationals as a sophomore in 2023
Ryan Sullivan
Projected Weight: 141
Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler (West Virginia)
  • Two-time AAA state finalist and a two-time WPIAL finalist in high school
  • PIAA champion at 113 pounds as a junior
  • Redshirted at Pitt in 2019-20 before becoming a Mountaineer
  • 2021 NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds and defeated three other national qualifiers that year, including Iowa State's Zach Redding in the first round of the tournament
Tye Varndell
Projected Weight: 133
Cambridge Springs, Pa. / Cambridge Springs (Edinboro)
  • Three-time PIAA qualifier and two-time state placewinner in high school, including a second-place finish as a senior
  • Compiled a 148-19 high school record with 50 wins by fall
  • Went 27-25 at Edinboro, including a 15-13 record at 133 pounds as a freshman in 2019-20
  • Owns career collegiate wins over a number of NCAA qualifiers, including Clarion's Seth Koleno

  • Two-time PIAA placewinner, recording fourth place finishes in 2020 and 2021
  • Ranked 137th P4P on Matscouts 2023 Big Board
  • Career record of 73-16 entering his senior year

  • Two-time PIAA state qualifier at Parkland, including a seventh-place finish in 2023

  • Two-time PIAA placewinner at Armstrong, taking seventh in back-to-back years (2022-23)

  • PIAA state champion as a junior in 2022
  • Recorded three total top-three finishes at the PIAA tournament, including a runner-up finish as a sophomore in 2021 and a third-place finish as a senior
  • Ranked 130th P4P on Matscouts 2023 Big Board
David McClelland

  • Two-time OHSAA state champion, winning in back-to-back years in 2022-23
  • Placed second at Florida state tournament while attending Lake Highland Prep
  • Two-time NHSCA national runner-up, in his junior and senior seasons
  • Currently ranked 19th at 138 pounds by FloWrestling
Deegan Ross
