Women's Golf Takes 10th at Charleston Invite

CHARLESTON, W.Va --- The Golden Eagle women's golf team continued their hot play to start the season with another round among the best in program history, finishing 10th overall at the Charleston Invitational over the course of 36 holes.

Clarion started the tournament with a 345 on Monday, which was consistent with what the team had shot the weekend before at the Vulcan Invitational hosted by California (Pa.). That weekend the Golden Eagles carded rounds of 344 and 343 respectively, giving them their best two-round score (687) since the 2011 Mercyhurst Fall Invitational, when they also shot a 682

The Golden Eagles tied that mark at Edgewood Country Club this week, though, when they notched a team score of 337 on Tuesday. That ranks among the best single-round scores in program history, and is the best since the team shot a 336 on the opening day of the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational on Sept. 10, 2011. Clarion finished with a two-round score of 682 at Charleston, matching the two-round mark set at that same 2011 tournament. They did it despite the wet and rainy conditions in Charleston, enduring several weather delays before finishing up.

Freshman Hannah Smith was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles, shooting identical rounds on both days of the tournament. The first-year athlete carded an 83 on both Monday and Tuesday to finish with a two-round score of 166, good for 50th overall in the huge field.

Upperclassmen Sylvia Stibley and Samantha Huth were close behind and right next to one another on the leaderboard, with the former shooting rounds of 88 and 82 for a two-round score of 170. Huth was just one stroke behind Stibley on Tuesday after finishing with an identical score on Monday, going 88-83-171. Hailee Liptak rounded out the team result for the Golden Eagles a two-round score of 89-86-175.
