Box Score SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle tennis team locked up a road win in exciting fashion, with Clarion overcoming Shippensburg for a 4-3 victory.
Â
It was high drama at the Robb Sports Complex as the two teams were tied at three points apiece, with only the No. 4 singles match still on the court.
Josie Beckerleg had won the first set by a 6-2 score and was looking to hold on for the win in the second, receiving the serve from Rachel Gallagher with a 6-5 lead. Beckerleg broke Gallagher's serve to take the game, winning both her own match and the team match in the process.
Â
The Golden Eagles started the day by taking what turned out to be an essential doubles point. Playing down a person and thereby conceding one doubles and one singles match, Clarion needed both doubles matches contested to get the point. Win the point they did, starting with the duo of
Davan Lion and
Alexis Strouse topping Corrine Markovich and Brighid Cantwell by a 6-3 score in the No. 1 match. Beckerleg and her partner
Alyson Fisher beat Brooklynn Rupert and Ali Zapach by the same score to lock up the point.
Â
That tied the overall match at 1-1, with the Golden Eagles needing three singles wins for the victory.
Davan Lion beat Markovich in straight sets at the No. 1 position, ripping a return winner past her on match point for the 6-3, 6-1 win. Strouse, meanwhile, cruised to a straight sets victory over her own, beating Zapach 6-3, 6-0. The Raiders won at Nos. 3 and 5 singles to tie the match, though Fisher rallied from being down a set to Rupert to force a third.
