Edgar was inducted into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
TORONTO --- Frankie Edgar, a former Golden Eagle student-athlete and a 2016 inductee into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame, will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame later this year. The announcement came during the UFC 297 broadcast on Saturday, January 20.
Â
"Frankie Edgar is one of the greatest athletes in UFC history," UFC CEO Dana White said in an official statement. "Frankie had an amazing career and consistently fought the best athletes in the world across multiple weight classes for more than 15 years. He is a legend, and it will be an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame."
Â
Edgar enjoyed a stellar career as a Golden Eagle wrestler from 2001-05, compiling a career record of 120-55 and qualifying for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in all four years of his career. As a senior in 2005, Edgar went 40-9 overall and won both the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) championship at 141 pounds, and went 2-2 in his run at the national championships.
Â
After finishing his time at Clarion, Edgar authored an impressive career in the world of mixed martial arts. In 2010 he won the UFC Lightweight Championship in a unanimous decision over reigning champion B.J. Penn, and later successfully defended his championship three times from 2010-12. That is tied for the most successful title defenses in the history of the division. He continued to fight until his retirement in 2022.
