Men's Swimming & Diving Opens Year at PSAC Fall Meets

YORK, Pa. --- The swimmers of the Golden Eagles men's swimming & diving team kicked off their season with a pair of outstanding efforts, taking second place in both the PSAC Sprint Frenzy and the PSAC Fall Invitational at the Graham Aquatic Center on Friday. In each instance Clarion finished just points behind winner West Chester.

Sprint Frenzy Recap

The day started with a thrilling finish in the 200 Medley Relay, with the Golden Eagles topping West Chester by three-quarters of a second for the win. Henry Miller, Dom Cortopassi, David Bocci and Austin Prokopec completed the relay in a time of 1:33.62, with Bocci's leg of the relay coming in a half-second faster than that of the Golden Rams' third leg.

Miller went on to pick up the first individual win of the day for Clarion, leading the field in the 50 Breast with a time of 26.75. Prokopec added his own a few events later, winning the 50 Free with a PSAC-qualifying time of 21.38, and Bocci won the 50 Fly with a time of 23.03 that was .45 seconds better than West Chester's Brey Wright.

That left Cortopassi as the only member of the first relay to not win an event, and the junior crossed that item off the list in the 100 IM. He edged out the Golden Rams' Ben Desclous with a time of 52.65 for his first race win of the season. The 200 Free Relay squad of Bocci, Cortopassi, Mason Peck and Prokopec then closed things out in the first meet with a second-place finish, posting a time of 1:27.46.

Mason Irwin returned to action and immediately hit a PSAC qualifying time, placing third in the 100 Free with a time of 48.75. Gavin Guckavan and Dylan Chaky both also finished in the top-nine in the event to represent a significant portion of points. Richard Scholer added a seventh-place finish in the 50 Breast, and Ryan Ehlers posted a seventh of his own in the 50 Free. Clarion had three of the top-seven finishers in the 50 Back, with Peck (3rd) leading the way for Kevin Santos (5th) and Aidan Ochoa (7th).

Fall Invitational Recap

It was another meet, another relay win to start the proceedings, as the Golden Eagles won the 400 Medley Relay at the outset of the Fall Invitational. Miller, Cortopassi, Bocci and Prokopec again blazed the trail, touching the wall in 3:28.59. That time was nearly three full seconds better than the second-place effort from West Chester.

Figuring one good turn deserved another, Bocci went on to claim his second individual title of the day. He took the lead in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 1:56.80, while Mason Irwin and Eric Kim took fifth and seventh, respectively. Peck hit a PSAC qualifying mark in the 100 Fly, finishing fifth overall with a time of 53.69, and Cortopassi hit one in the 200 Free with a 1:47.80 that was also good for fifth place. Rounding out the qualifying marks in the second meet was Guckavan, who took third in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:00.22. Scholar just missed on one but took fifth overall with a time of 1:02.52.

Clarion finished off their day in the 400 Free Relay. The Golden Eagles' quartet of Prokopec, Guckavan, Bocci and Cortopassi took second overall with a time of 3:12.36.
