AMHERST, N.Y. --- In a midseason non-conference battle, the Golden Eagles' soccer team fell by a score of 2-0 to Daemen on the road. The game was a tightly-contested defensive battle, but the Wildcats pulled through with a pair of goals in the second half.
Â
Daemen broke through into the scoring column six minutes into the second half when Kylie Miranto kneed in a nice cross from Magda Carpenter, with a second assist from Alyssa Diaz. The duo of Miranto and Diaz proved to be thorns in the Golden Eagles' side, teaming up again when Diaz got behind the Clarion defense and beat
Alex Velez. Miranto assisted with a nice crossing pass to put Diaz in scoring position.
Â
The first half saw the Daemen offense fire 11 shots at the Golden Eagles' goal, but Velez was able to stop all three shots that were on target. The Wildcats' defense worked hard to keep Clarion off the scoreboard, blocking multiple shots throughout the first half to ensure that it went into halftime tied at zero.
Â
The Clarion offense came out in the second half much more aggressively, with ten shots in the half, eight of which were on goal compared to just four total shots in the first half.
Marisa Colondrillo led the way for the Golden Eagles with five shots, while
Hailey Dobb contributed four shots, all of which were on target.
Â
Clarion's best opportunity to get on the board came with 38 minutes left, when Dobb split through a double team, created some space, and fired off a shot that was blocked by the diving Becca Schultz to keep the score at 1-0.
Â
After Daemen scored their second goal at the 12:40 mark of the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to press to get past the Wildcats' defense. With 25 minutes left in the second half, Dobb delivered a nice cross pass, and Colondrillo dribbled into open space and fired a high shot that landed in the waiting arms of Schultz.
Â
The Golden Eagles continued their assault on goal but just could not break into the scoring column and beat the Daemen goalkeeper. In the final thirty seconds of the match, freshman
Paige Griest came up from her defensive position to record her first shot on goal.
