ROCHESTER, N.Y. --- The Golden Eagles women's basketball took the lead in the opening seconds and never once allowed their opponent to pull ahead of them, winning their second straight game with an 88-79 road win against Roberts Wesleyan. In a game marred by numerous turnovers on both sides Clarion came out on top, outscoring the Redhawks 30-23 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Â
It was a balanced scoring effort from Clarion, with four players scoring in double-digits and two players –
Arianna Seitz and
Autumn Taylor – each going over the 20-point mark on the evening. The Golden Eagles shot 43.2 percent from the floor and got better as the game went on, shooting more efficiently with each passing quarter.
Â
The game saw 46 combined turnovers from the two teams, 22 from Clarion and 24 from Roberts Wesleyan, but the Golden Eagles were better able to take advantage of their opponents' miscues. They outscored the Redhawks 27-19 in points off turnovers, and also held a 13-5 advantage in second chance points.
Â
Clarion took the lead right off the jump, with Seitz making a three-pointer after
Tearra Cook pulled down an offensive board on the game's opening possession. That sparked a 10-0 run to start the game that included transition buckets from Taylor and
Siara Conley, as well as a three-pointer by Taylor.
Malayziah Etheredge made it 15-7 with a bucket in the paint and Cook kept her side ahead by two possessions with a pair of free throws just before the end of the quarter. Seitz opened the second quarter the same way she did the first, making a three-pointer, and freshman
Zoe Guice added a trey of her own to make it 22-13.
Â
Hannah Wilkerson got the lead back into double-digits with 6:54 left in the second, converting an and-one that made it 27-17, but Georgia Haverlock – who finished the game with a career-high 37 points – scored just before the halftime break to make it 38-35. Angalece Quinones got the lead down to just one point early in the third quarter but the Golden Eagles put together another run, starting with a make from
Siara Conley. Guice and Conley scored on back-to-back possessions to cap a 6-0 run, and Conley stole the ball from Erin Frazier and scored on the other end at the 6:26 mark to give Clarion a 49-39 edge.
Â
The Redhawks battled back with a 15-5 run, tying the score at 54 on a free throw from Marianna Freeman with under two minutes in the third quarter. Despite the shift in momentum the Golden Eagles gathered themselves and re-established the lead thanks to a three-pointer by Seitz at the one-minute mark. Roberts Wesleyan never again tied the score, pulling to within two points late in the fourth quarter before Clarion shut the door with a 15-8 run.
