Softball Continues Marathon Pace with DH vs. Gannon

CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle softball team continued their marathon stretch of doubleheaders on Tuesday afternoon, dropping both ends of a twinbill to Gannon at Memorial Stadium. Clarion lost both games in five innings, with the Golden Knights winning the first 14-0 and the second 10-1.

Game 1: Gannon 14, Clarion 0 (5 inn.)

RECAP: The Golden Knights scored early and often in the first game of the doubleheader, putting up three or more runs in each of the first four innings to build for themselves a 14-0 advantage. Gabi Vasi provided the biggest hit of the day, a three-run home run that scored Natalia Mallozzi and Jules Ryan to make it a 7-0 game in the top of the second inning.

Conversely, pitcher Maggie Lenda was strong against the Golden Eagle lineup, limiting them to a pair of hits and allowing just one other baserunner. Billie Aguglia notched the first hit of the day with a line drive single to right field, shooting a ball the opposite way for a hit.

Clarion put together something of a threat in the bottom of the fourth inning, starting when Emily Buchleitner beat out a throw from shortstop for a leadoff infield single. She advanced to third base on a pair of groundouts by Kathryn O'Horo and Tori Martrano, and Rachel Helsley drew a five-pitch walk to extend the inning. Lenda extinguished the threat when she forced Desi Allen to ground out to third for the final out.

The Golden Knights tacked on three runs in the top of the third inning to make it 10-0, and Lynn Porter's pinch-hit two-run double in the top of the fourth kicked off a four-run inning that made it 14-0.

Game 2: Gannon 10, Clarion 1 (5 inn.)

RECAP: It seemed as if Gannon was going to carry all the momentum from the first game into the second, as the Golden Knights scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Starter Taylor Eckles settled from there, though, eventually working her way through 4.1 innings of action, including scoreless frames in the second and third.

The Golden Eagles got a little more going against starter Josie Spano, including a leadoff double for Martrano in the top of the second inning that sailed over the head of right fielder Emma Smerick. Clarion was not able to take advantage of the runner in scoring position, though, as Spano retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

The lone Golden Eagle run came in the bottom of the fifth inning, after the Golden Knights took a 10-0 lead with a four-run fifth inning of their own. Rachel Helsley smacked her third home run in the last eight days, drilling a 1-2 pitch over the fence in center field to cut Gannon's lead to 10-1. That led off the inning, and Allen followed with an opposite field single to potentially keep the game alive. Spano settled again, though, forcing a pair of flyouts as well as a groundout from Lauren Hartman to close the win.
