CALIFORNIA, Pa. --- The Golden Eagle softball team finished off their nearly-full week of action on Friday afternoon, falling in both ends of a doubleheader to California (PA) at Lilley Field. The Vulcans won both games in five innings, taking the first by a score of 10-0 and the second 18-0.
Â
Game 1: California (PA) 10, Clarion 0 (5 inn.)
Â
RECAP: The Vulcans jumped on the Golden Eagles for three quick runs in the bottom of the first inning, starting with an RBI single from Shayna Postler and followed by a two-run home run by Alyssa Rose that upped the advantage to 3-0.
Â
Clarion nearly got some of those runs back in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with one out.
Tori Martrano led off with a single to right field and
Desi Allen contributed a one-out base hit to center, putting runners on first and second.
Billie Aguglia hit an opposite-field single to right field to fill the diamond, but Caleigh Rister whiffed
Jordy Best and
Annika Smith to end the threat.
Â
Cal scored four more runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of a bases-loaded situation. Rose was hit by a pitch to bring one run across, and Kaitlyn Achtermeier eventually helped a pair of runs come in with two outs after an error at shortstop. Three more runs scored in the fourth inning, including a two-run double by Rose for her fifth RBI of the game, and Rister held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the win.
Â
The Golden Eagles actually out-hit the Vulcans in the first game, with leadoff batter
Alexis Valencia going 2-for-3.
Â
Game 2: California (PA) 18, Clarion 0 (5 inn.)
Â
RECAP: The second game was all Vulcans from the start, with Cal exploding for 18 runs on just 10 hits. They also took advantage of eight walks, four hit-by-pitches and three errors as they built their significant advantage.
Â
Clarion had a solid opportunity to score first runs of the game themselves, in the top of the first inning.
Alexis Valencia hit a one-out bunt single to reach base, and she went on to steal second and third to put herself in scoring position. Rose got out of the situation by striking out Martrano.
The Vulcans followed up with three runs in the bottom of the inning, with Rose helping her own cause with an RBI single and Wilson hitting a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 3-0. The teams exchanged scoreless second innings, and
Emily Buchleitner's one-out double in the third was squandered when Rose retired Valencia and
Rachel Helsley to end the top of the frame. The floodgates opened for the Vulcans in the home half of the inning, starting with a leadoff solo home run by Rister. That would be the first of 11 runs for Cal in the fourth inning, giving them a 14-0 lead.
Â
They scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, setting the final deficit at 18-0.
