PREVIEW: Wrestling Renews Rivalry with Edinboro

Edinboro Fighting Scots (6-2, 0-1 MAC) at Clarion Golden Eagles (1-5, 1-1 MAC)
Sunday, January 12 // 2 p.m.
Clarion, Pa. // Tippin Gymnasium

The Clarion Golden Eagles take on the Edinboro Fighting Scots Sunday at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium looking for their first home win of the 2024-2025 season.

Clarion is on a roll against Edinboro, having won the last five consecutive meetings, including a 43-3 victory last season on the tartan mat at McComb Field House. The Golden Eagles won all but one bout in that contest, with eight of those nine resulting in bonus points.

Clarion at a Glance
The Golden Eagles started 2025 in Chattanooga, Tenn. at the Southern Scuffle, where they finished 16th in the 23-team field.

Highlighting the trip south were the performances of 149-pounder Kyle Schickel and 174-pounder John Worthing, the former taking fourth in his weight class and the latter fifth. Ethan Wiant came up just short of reaching the podium at 197 pounds, falling in the blood round on Saturday evening.

Worthing's run at "The Scuffle" included a 9-7 victory over Army's Dalton Harkins, who was ranked 27th by both Intermat and FloWrestling at the time. The win helped push Worthing into the national rankings, with the Clarion senior now ranked ranked 29th by Intermat. Schickel, meanwhile, won the fifth place match by major decision, beating Davidson's Tyler McKnight by a 16-5 score.
Clarion is 1-5 this season and 1-1 in the MAC. Their lone dual win came in their most recent match, when they beat Bloomsburg by a 40-3 score.

Edinboro at a Glance
The Fighting Scots enter the match-up sporting a 6-2 overall record, which includes a 2-0 mark on the road. Edinboro has been on a roll in dual meet action, winning four straight dating back to Dec. 7. Most recently they beat Sacred Heart 43-3 at McComb Fieldhouse on Dec. 20.

To date Edinboro shares just one common opponent with Clarion. George Mason edged them out 21-18 in their first dual of the year on Nov. 15, 2024. The Fighting Scots opened the match with three straight wins but the Patriots matched them on the back end, winning every bout from 184 pounds on, including a technical fall.

Colton Camacho (133 pounds) is ranked 27th FloWrestling and Ryan Burgos (149 pounds) 32nd by Intermat.

Burgos was a national qualifier in 2023.

Clarion vs. Edinboro
Clarion and Edinboro first met in 1968, a dual that the Golden Eagles won, 39-5. Since then, they have wrestled 53 more times, with Clarion holding a 29-25 edge in victories.

The marquee match-up of the upcoming dual should be the 149-pound bout between Schickel and Burgos. Schickel enters with a record of 14-9, while Burgos is 5-3. The two previously met in 2023, with Burgos winning a 7-4 decision.
