Wrestling Tripped Up at Home by Edinboro

CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles wrestling team returned to their home mat for the first time in 2025, falling by a 26-12 score to Edinboro at Tippin Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Clarion had previously won five straight dual meetings with the Fighting Scots.

The Golden Eagles took four of the 10 bouts on the mat on Sunday, including three straight at the upper weights to close out the dual. Adrian Gacek kicked off that run with a win over Hunter Hutcheson at 184 pounds, coming within a hair's breadth of earning a major decision. Gacek strung together a pair of takedowns against Hutcheson in the second period, cutting him each time to take a 9-4 lead entering the third period. He added another takedown early in the third period en route to the 14-8 decision.

Ethan Wiant followed that up with a win at 197 pounds, beating Nick Lodato by 8-1 decision. He scored the first takedown of the bout in the first period, and built on his modest 3-1 lead early in the third when he reversed Lodato after starting on the bottom to make it 5-1. Wiant rode Lodato out for the remainder of bout, putting him to his back for two near fall points just before the whistle.

Wrapping up the three-match swing was Austin Chapman, who won a marathon overtime bout against Kade Sottolono. Neither big man scored a takedown in regulation nor in the sudden victory period, and Sottolano took a 2-1 lead with a quick escape in the first tiebreaker. Chapman got a point of his own during his choice in the tiebreaker when Sottolano was called for interlocked hands on top, and Chapman eventually broke out of his grasp to take a 3-2 lead. Sottolano took a desperation shot with two seconds remaining but Chapman slipped behind him for a last-second takedown and a 6-2 decision.

Clarion's fourth win of the day came early in the dual, with Kyle Schickel beating Colin Roberts at 149 pounds. The senior improved to 15-9 on the season and 11-3 in his last 14 matches after scoring a quick takedown on a double-leg against Roberts. That turned out to be the only takedown of the bout and gave Schickel a 4-2 decision.
