PREVIEW: Golden Eagles to Host SIUE, Princeton

The Golden Eagles will be looking for that elusive first home win when Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) and Princeton come to Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium Sunday (Jan. 19). Clarion is slated to take on SIUE at 12 p.m. and Princeton immediately after, at roughly 2 p.m.

Prior to the match with SIUE, twenty-two Golden Eagles will be recognized as Scholar-Wrestlers for their achievements in the classroom.

The Golden Eagles at a Glance
Despite falling to Edinboro at home in their last dual a week ago (Jan. 12), 26-12, the Golden Eagles wrestled well, capping the afternoon off by winning the last three matches.

Adrian Gacek started the run with a 14-8 decision at 184 pounds, Ethan Wiant following with an 8-1 victory at 197.

The highlight of the closing streak came at 285-pounds, where Austin Chapman scored five points in the second 30-second tiebreaker to earn a 6-2 decision.
Kyle Schickel also notched a win against Edinboro, a 4-2 decision.

Schickel has been on a tear as of late, going 11-3 in his last 14 matches, which included a fourth-place finish at the Southern Scuffle to open 2025.
Clarion 174-pounder John Worthing, the Golden Eagles' sole ranked wrestler, did not see action against the Fighting Scots. Intermat currently has Worthing ranked 30th in the nation.

Clarion is 1-6 this season and 1-2 in the MAC.

The Golden Eagles are 1-4 in their last five duals, the win a 40-3 victory at Bloomsburg on Dec. 19.

SIUE at a Glance
Perhaps the most notable of the Cougars' contingent is 149-pounder Caleb Tyus, a two-time NCAA qualifier.

Expect the match between Tyus and Clarion's Schickel to be a highlight of the dual. The two have wrestled three times during their careers, Tyus coming out on top on each occasion.

Clarion has an overall record of 4-3 against SIUE dating back to their first meeting in 1990, which the Golden Eagles won, 32-10.
Since both schools joined the MAC, Clarion has a 3-2 edge in duals over SIUE, including going 2-0 at home (one match was wrestled on campus and the other at Brookville High School).

The teams last met in Dec. 2022 at a quad meet hosted by Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C., the Golden Eagles beating the Cougars, 25-17. Schickel and Worthing are the only current Golden Eagles remaining from that starting line-up. They both won decisions.

Clarion last wrestled SIUE in Tippin Gymnasium during January 2021. The Golden Eagles won that dual, 21-15. Schickel was in Clarion's starting line-up for that meet as well, decisioning his opponent.

The Cougars wrestled their first official away match of the season Friday evening at Kent State (Jan. 17).
Going into the match against Kent State, SIUE was 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the MAC, the Cougars winners of their last three of five.

Princeton at a Glance
The Tigers come to Tippin Gymnasium as FloWrestling's 28th-ranked team in the nation.

Princeton has a quintuplet of national-ranked wrestlers per FloWrestling and Intermat – 125-pound freshman Marc-Anthony McGowan (#25/#23), 141-pound sophomore Eligh Rivera (#30/#28), 149-pound sophomore Ty Whalen, 184-pound senior Micheal Squires, and 197-pound senior Luke Stout (#16/#19).

Stout's last name should be familiar to fans of Clarion wrestling, as he is the son of former Golden Eagle stand-out Bryan Stout (1994-1997). The elder Stout was the only wrestler in Clarion history to earn NCAA Division I All-American honors four times. He was inducted into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Clarion has a 4-0 record against Princeton, the schools last meeting in 2012 with the Golden Eagles taking a 36-9 victory.

None of the anticipated starters in Sunday's dual for either team have previously met at the collegiate level.

Princeton has a season record of 3-5. The Tigers have won two of their last five matches, their most recent victory coming Jan. 10 when they shut-out Morgan State, 46-0.
