Wrestling Goes on Road, Falls to Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio --- The Golden Eagles wrestling team put on a late surge against Cleveland State on Friday night, but it was not enough as the Vikings beat Clarion 24-10 on Friday night.

The highlight of the night for Clarion came in the 125-pound bout, where Travis Clawson logged his first bonus point victory in more than a month against Ben Aranda. The Golden Eagle freshman got the first takedown of the match, bringing Aranda down roughly 30 seconds into their bout, and he very nearly pinned Aranda just before the buzzer in the first period, earning a takedown and four near fall points to make it 10-2. Clawson scored another takedown late in the third period to lock up the major decision, taking his match by a 15-3 score.

Clawson was the first Golden Eagle to win a match, but he was not the last as Gianni Silvestri and Kyle Schickel followed up with wins. In the case of Silvestri it was his second straight victory as he beat Landen Duncan by a 4-2 score. Silvestri took Duncan down early in the second period, and escape in the third period locked up the win for the Clarion freshman.

Rounding out Clarion's wins on Friday was Kyle Schickel, who continued his hot pace from December with another win by major decision on Friday. Schickel scored the first takedown of the match against the Vikings' Connor Saylor, and in the second period took Saylor to the mat again for a 6-2 advantage. He hit Saylor with a double-leg takedown late in the period to solidify the result, winning 11-2 by major decision.
