Schickel, Worthing Place in Top-5 at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Two Golden Eagles placed in the top-five at their respective weights at the Southern Scuffle on Sunday, with Kyle Schickel placing fifth at 149 pounds and John Worthing taking fourth at 174 pounds.

Clarion finished 16th in the team standings, with a total of 38.5 team points.

Coming off a stretch where he led the team in point scoring during the month of December, Schickel wrapped up a successful weekend at McKenzie Arena with two more wins on Sunday, including a 16-5 major decision in the fifth-place bout against Davidson's Tyler McKnight. Schickel nearly wrapped up the win in the first period when he dragged McKnight down by the arm and turned him to his back for a three-point near fall, but McKnight worked his way out into a reversal.

Starting the second period on top, Schickel rolled McKnight backwards for a four-point near fall and tacked on another takedown and near fall late in the second period to build an insurmountable advantage.

Earlier in the day, Schickel won his way into at least a top-five finish with a victory over The Citadel's Carson Desrosier. Desrosier had lost just one match all year before the Scuffle, but Schickel took him down and turned him for a two-point near fall less than a minute into their match to take a 5-0 lead. He added another five-point move with a takedown and a near fall with under a minute to go in the first period to take a 10-1 lead, and he finished with an 11-4 decision. Schickel lost in the consolation semifinal match to Campbell's Wynton Denkins in a 7-2 decision.

Worthing won his first two consolation matches of the day to earn a spot in the third place match, including a win over a nationally-ranked opponent in the process. His day started with a convincing 9-0 major decision over Virginia Tech's Ty Finn, with Worthing taking Finn down and to his back for a four-point near fall and a 7-0 lead just before the end of the first period.

More impressive, perhaps, was his effort in the consolation semifinal match. Taking on Army's Dalton Harkins – ranked 27th by both Intermat and FloWrestling – Worthing overpowered his opponent on the edge of the mat for a takedown and a four-point near fall with just four seconds remaining in the first period. Worthing led 7-1 after two periods but Harkins went on the attack in the third period, taking Worthing down and landing a two-point near fall to cut the deficit to 8-6. Worthing held on through the final seconds, picking up a 9-7 decision.

In the third-place match against American's Caleb Campos, Worthing fell behind by a 5-1 deficit after two periods of work. His day was cut short by an injury that forced him to default.
