GREENSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the nation for 30 minutes on Wednesday, but a fourth quarter surge by #5/10 Seton Hill delivered a 92-68 win for the Griffins in PSAC play. Clarion led with 3:37 left to play in the third quarter before Seton Hill exploded over the remainder of regulation.
Â
A slow start for the Golden Eagles faded away in the second quarter as Clarion turned the heat up on the Griffins, shooting 16-of-30 (.533) in the second and third quarter to erase a double-digit deficit. Clarion turned a 15-point hole early in the second quarter into a six-point one at the half, starting with a fast break layup from
Malayziah Etheredge.
Autumn Taylor brought it down to single digits with a jumper at the 4:27 mark, and she pulled the Golden Eagles to within 34-29 with under three minutes to go in the half.
Â
Taylor had her best scoring output in more than a month, going off for 29 points on 9-of-19 shooting and an 11-of-16 performance from the free throw line. The sophomore guard pulled down a team-high six rebounds and also forced two turnovers. She went right back to work in the third quarter, following up a
Siara Conley fast break jumper with a make of her own to cut the Griffins' lead to 42-38.
Zoe Guice scored on two straight possessions, making it 46-44 with a bucket at the 7:07 mark, and Taylor tied the game two minutes later with a pair of free throws.
Â
For the next several minutes Clarion kept their foot on the gas, with Guice and Conley adding buckets to keep the Golden Eagles in the lead.
Madison Palek scored with 3:58 to go in the quarter to make it a 55-53 lead, but that was the last time the Golden Eagles led as the Griffins stormed back. Hallie Cowan drained a three-pointer to put Seton Hill ahead 58-55, and the Griffins extended the lead to 67-60 before the end of the quarter. The Griffins scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter as well, extending their lead to 81-60, en route to the big win.
Â
Guice scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Etheredge came off the bench for eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
