ITHACA, N.Y. --- The Clarion wrestling team heads out of state for the first time this season, hitting the road to Ithaca, N.Y. for Cornell's Big Red Invitational on Sunday, November 23.
The tournament, now in its second year, is contested individually in a round-robin format, wrestlers divided into pools by weight class. Each grappler is guaranteed four matches – placement determined by won-loss records, bonus points (major decisions, tech falls, pins) and head-to-head results.
Clarion competed in the inaugural edition of this event last season. Wes Barnes, then a 165-pounder, won his pool. Two weeks ago, he captured one of the 157-pound pools at the Journeymen Collegiate Championship.
Scott Johnson and
Ethan Wiant were second in their respective Big Red pools last November, the former wrestling as a 133-pounder and the later a 197-pounder. Johson, now at 141 pounds, took second in his Journeymen pool. Wiant will once again represent Clarion at 197 pounds.
A host of other Golden Eagle grapplers are looking to build upon early season success.
Travis Clawson posted a winning record at the Clarion Open the first weekend of the campaign, following up with a 125-pound pool championship at the Journeymen. Golden Eagle 165-pounder
Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, likewise, posted a 3-2 record at the Clarion Open and then won his Journeymen pool.
Sawyer Ayotte (165 pounds) was also a Journeymen pool champion.
Freshmen Ayotte and
Gabe Lilly (174 pounds) have had strong starts to their first seasons as Golden Eagles. Ayotte is currently 7-2 and Lilly 6-3. Though he doesn't yet have a tournament placing to his credit,
Connor Eck has battled, going 8-4 in two outings.
Binghamton, Brown, Bloomsburg, George Mason, and Sacred Heart will be joining Clarion and Cornell in Ithaca.
Live scoring and match-by-match updates are available on Track Wrestling. Competition begins at 9:00 a.m.
