Six Golden Eagles Win Titles at Big Red Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Golden Eagles wrestling team traveled to Cornell for the Big Red Invitational. The Golden Eagles finished with six winners and five runners-up.
 
Alejandro Herrera-Rondon was the "Group C" 165-pound champion, not surrendering a point in the entire tournament. Herrera-Rondon dominated his competition by winning all four matches by technical fall, including two in the first period. Herrera-Rondon outscored his opponents 64-0 across his four matches on Sunday, securing 6 takedowns and 44 near-fall points in those matches. His victories came against Nico Romero of Brown (16-0 5:16), Timur Beksultan of Binghamton (15-0 1:14), Calvin Pineda of Sacred Heart (15-0, 2:06), and Nick Franzen of Sacred Heart (18-0 4:02).
 
Joey Fischer was the "Group C" 133-pound champion, winning all his matches by bonus point victory. Fischer began his day with an impressive performance against Sacred Heart's Will Schmitt, securing 3 takedowns on route to a 2nd period tech-fall victory. Fischer would follow that up with a pinfall victory over John Shechy of Sacred Heart in the 2nd period with a standing cement mixer. Fischer's third match started scoreless after the first period, but after a quick escape, he would take his opponent down and earn four near-fall points to take an 8-0 lead. Fischer would ride out Jacob Hanlon of Binghamton for the rest of the match to earn a 9-0 major decision. In his final match, Fischer earned a first period pinfall victory over Anthony Samuels of Sacred Heart.
 
Matthew Smith was the "Group D" 149-pound champion, winning all his matches by bonus point victory. Smith opened his day with a high offensive output securing four takedowns in a 3rd period 17-1 tech-fall victory over Luca Stefanelli of Cornell. Smith followed that up with another 17-1 3rd period tech-fall victory this time over Hank Powell of Sacred Heart. He continued to show his impressive offensive capabilities on his feet with another four-takedown performance. In Smith's last match of the day, the first period would end scoreless. Smith earned a quick escape in the 2nd period to take a 1-0 lead and followed that up with a single leg takedown to increase his lead to 4-0. Smith would add four more points via near-fall to take home an 8-0 major decision victory over Kai Tengco of Brown.
 
Wesley Barnes was the "Group E" 157-pound champion, winning all three of his matches by bonus point victory. Barnes started his day on fire with 5 takedowns in a 17-2 3rd period tech-fall victory over Nolan Hook of Sacred Heart. Barnes then made quick work of Binghamton's Gavin Nolan with a first period pinfall victory. In Barnes' final match of the day, he continued his momentum from the previous two matches with two first period takedowns. He would secure another takedown in the 2nd period, followed by an escape and a riding time point in the 3rd period to secure an 11-3 major decision victory over Cael Raines of Bloomsburg.
 
Travis Clawson was the "Group A" 125-pound champion. Clawson dropped his first match in a close 10-7 decision against Marcello Milani of Cornell. He quickly bounced back with a pinfall victory over Weston Pisarchick of Clarion. Clawson's final match of the day was against Ben Monn from George Mason. The match started scoreless in the first two periods after Clawson would ride out Monn in the 2nd period. Clawson would start in the bottom position and earn a quick escape to take a 1-0 lead. Then he surrendered a takedown with 1:05 remaining to go down 3-1. He then earned an escape, and a riding time point to tie the match 3-3 at the end of regulation. In sudden victory after a 30-plus second scramble, Clawson ended up on top with the match-sealing takedown to win 6-3.
 
Colton Wade was the "Group B" 133-pound champion. Wade started his day off with an impressive performance against Anthony Clem of Sacred Heart, securing 3 takedowns in an 11-0 major decision victory. Wade would then win his second match by a 4-2 decision over Clarion's Aiden Beimel where a first period takedown ended up being the difference maker. Wade continued his impressive display in his final match against Sacred Heart's Michael Baker, snagging a takedown 16 seconds into the match, followed by 12 near-fall points to secure a 15-0 first period tech-fall victory.
 
A few other standout performances for the Golden Eagles today:
  • Coy Bryson finished runner-up in the 165-pound "Group B" bracket finishing 3-1 on the day, including two first-period pinfall victories.
  • Cody Hamilton finished runner-up in the 157-pound "Group C" bracket finishing 3-1 on the day, with a 1st period pinfall victory and a sudden victory win in his final match.
  • Patrick Cutchember finished runner-up in the 174-pound "Group C" bracket finishing 2-1 on the day that included a 4-1 decision victory and a first-period pinfall victory over Luke Longo of Sacred Heart.
  • Scott Johnson finished runner-up in the 141-pound "Group C" bracket finishing 3-1 with 3 bonus point victories. A 2nd period tech-fall over Jake Ice of Sacred Heart, a 14-2 major decision over Richie Woods of Bloomsburg, and a 2nd period tech-fall over Josias Daniels.
  • Easton Mull finished runner-up in the 125-pound "Group D" bracket finishing 3-1 on the day, including two tech-fall victories over Trey Smith of Binghamton and Corey Iannucci of Sacred Heart.
