Clarion wrestles its final duals of 2025 taking on Rider (12 p.m.) and Columbia (2 p.m.) in Lawrenceville, N.J. on Sunday, December 21.

The match with Rider is the second time this calendar year the Golden Eagles will scrap with the Broncs. Rider won the previous meeting, 32-11, which took place February 16 in Tippin Gymnasium.

This weekend's dual will be Clarion's first contest against Columbia since January 17, 2018, the Lions taking a 25-14 victory. Assistant coach Brock Zacherl earned a tech fall in that match.

Clarion at a Glance
Clarion has wrestled only one dual so far this season, that a 30-10 conference loss two weeks ago to Lock Haven (Dec. 5). The match with the Bald Eagles was highlighted by 133-pounder Joey Fischer's 8-2 victory against then 33rd-ranked Gable Strickland. Also winning at Lock Haven were Travis Clawson, a match-opening major decision at 125 pounds, and Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, whose victory at 165 pounds came immediately after intermission.

Seven potential Golden Eagle starters head to the Garden State with winning records – Clawson, 9-2; Fischer, 8-4; Scott Johnson, 7-3 at 141 pounds; Matthew Smith, 4-3 at 149 pounds; Wesley Barnes, 8-2 at 157 pounds; and Herrera-Rondon, 11-2.

A brief holiday break follows this weekend's action, after which Clarion travels to Chattanooga, Tenn, for the Southern Scuffle (Jan. 3).

Rider at a Glance
Rider has a 1-3 dual meet record and is 1-1 at home. The Broncs have lost their last two duals, most recently falling to then 20th-ranked Oklahoma, 26-15, in Lawrenceville (Dec. 14). They have yet to wrestle a MAC opponent.

Rider has four ranked wrestlers in the line-up – 125-pounder Tyler Klinsky (#22 FloWrestling/#19 Intermat); 133-pounder Will Betancourt (#32 Intermat); 141-pounder Eli Griffin (#15 FloWrestling/#13 Intermat), and 197-pounder Brock Zurawski (#21 FloWrestling/#23 Intermat). Griffin (11-3) was the Week 1 and Week 6 MAC East Wrestler of the Week. He was the 141-pound runner up at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas held the first weekend of the month (Dec. 5-6). Klinsky (8-3) was the MAC East Co-Wrestler of the Week for Weeks 2 and 4. Betancourt has a 8-5 record and Zurawski is 5-3.

Enrique Munguia, 4-7 at 174 pounds, was the 2025 165-pound MAC Champion.

Clarion vs. Rider
Clarion and Rider first met on November 24, 1998, the Broncs taking a 22-15 victory. The Broncs lead the series with the Golden Eagles, 22-4, and have won the last seven duals. Rider is 14-0 against Clarion at home and has a 10-2 advantage in conference duals.

Clarion last beat Rider on February 2, 2018, a pin in the last bout giving the Golden Eagles an 18-17 victory on the stage of Marwick-Boyd Auditorium. Zacherl scored a victory for Clarion in that contest.

Fischer is the only current Golden Eagle who has won a bout in a dual against Rider, earning a one-point decision as a sophomore 125-pounder (Feb. 12, 2023).

Golder Eagle grappler Ethan Wiant wrestled the Broncs Zurawski in last February's dual, losing a major decision.

Columbia at a Glance
Columbia is 1-2, its most recent dual a 25-9 loss at home to then 11th-ranked Michigan (Nov. 21). The Lions have not wrestled a neutral-site dual this season.
