AKRON, Ohio --- The Golden Eagles men's swimming & diving team closed their four-day stay in Akron on the highest of notes, wrapping their time at the Zippy Invite with a record breaking performance.
Â
The Clarion men were led on Sunday by a pair of championship final appearances in the breaststroke and backstroke events, with one of those leading to another NCAA B cut and a new program record. Senior
Dominic Cortopassi secured the team's highest individual finish of the evening session, placing fifth in the 200 Breast with a time of 1:59.62. That shattered the previous school record of 2:02.28 set by Ben Spencer in 2016 and easily cleared the NCAA B cut standard of 2:00.87. That time would also rank in the top-16 in NCAA Division II entering the day.
Â
The Golden Eagles showed considerable depth in the 200 Breast, placing four other swimmers in the finals. Senior
Gavin Guckavan won the B Final to take ninth place overall, touching the wall in 2:01.45. He was followed by
Rich Scholer (11th, 2:06.34),
Stewart Messer (13th, 2:09.32), and
Ryan Ehlers (15th, 2:10.80).
Â
In the 200 Back, freshman
Jacob Rider earned a spot in the A Final, placing eighth overall with a time of 1:48.87. Clarion also picked up points in the B Final of that event, with
Landon Seman taking 12th (1:55.99) and

Â
The distance specialists started the final session strong, with freshman

Kevin Santos added a 13th-place finish in the mile with a time of 16:49.08.
Â
Santos later returned to compete in the 200 Fly, where he finished 12th with a time of 1:59.47. Freshman

Â
In the sprint freestyle events,
Mason Peck led the way in the 100 Free, finishing 10th overall with a time of 45.83 and just barely missing a B cut himself.
Dylan Chaky (15th, 47.39) and
Logan Curtis (20th, 48.57) also scored for the Golden Eagles.
Â
