CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles wrestling team saw two of their seniors record impressive wins in the final home dual of their careers, but Clarion ultimately fell by a 32-11 score to Rider in Tippin Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The first of the two seniors to win on Senior Day was
Kyle Schickel, who methodically worked Matt Hoelke for a third period technical fall in the 149-pound bout. There were no near falls recorded by Schickel but rather a series of takedown after takedown, with the redshirt senior rattling off the seventh and final takedown of the match 22 seconds into the third period. That clinched the technical fall against Hoelke, who managed only a handful of escapes against Schickel.
Â
The second such result came in the final match of the day, with
Austin Chapman closing out his career in Tippin Gymnasium with a decision. Facing off against Collin French in the 285-pound bout, Chapman gritted his way through seven minutes. The two wrestlers had managed just one escape apiece through the first two periods, and with less than 30 seconds left in the third Chapman fought off a shot from French and re-attacked for a takedown. Chapman maintained the advantage for the rest of the bout, earning a victory in his final dual as a Golden Eagle.
Â
The 141-pound bout played out in a close manner.
Gianni Silvestri and Branden Palcko each recorded an escape at the beginning of the second and third periods, tying the bout at 1-1 going into short time. With under 10 seconds to go Silvestri went in on a single-leg takedown on Palcko and then worked for a second leg, bringing his opponent down just before the buzzer to clinch a 4-1 victory.
Â
Those were the bright spots for the Golden Eagles on Sunday as the Broncs did well in the remaining seven matches, winning five by bonus points. Rider won by fall at 125 and 133 pounds to build an early lead, and Colton Washleski added a technical fall at 157 pounds to expand the margin to 17-8.
Wesley Barnes nearly earned a late win of his own at 165 pounds, but lost in sudden victory to Cole McComas.
