CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles wrestling team competed in their penultimate match of the regular season on Saturday evening, with Clarion falling 43-4 to MAC East in-state rival Lock Haven in Tippin Gymnasium.
 
Travis Clawson continued what has been an exceptional run as of late, winning his fifth straight match and evening his season record at 10-10 in the process. Competing against the Bald Eagles' Branden Wentzel, Clawson got a takedown late in the first period to take the lead, and then beat the buzzer in the second period to go ahead 8-0. The third period started in neutral position and Clawson attacked again, throwing Wentzel by and jumping on his ankle for a third takedown. Clawson cut his opponent loose to try and earn the technical fall but instead settled for his fourth major decision in his past five matches, winning by a 12-1 margin.
 
That early bout was the highlight of the night for Clarion, as Lock Haven went on to win the next nine matches, with eight of those coming with bonus points. The exception was the 149-pound bout, where Kyle Schickel gave 32^nd-ranked Lucas Kapusta everything he could handle over the course of seven minutes. The Tippin Gymnasium fans were treated to a display of mat wrestling in the second period, as Kapusta and Schickel exchanged escapes to start the period. Schickel trailed 7-4 early in the third period before he hit Kapusta with a blast double to bring him to the mat, evening the score at 7-7. Kapusta escaped and managed to evade Schickel for the remainder of the bout, winning by an 8-7 score.
 
Clarion will close out their regular season in eight days' time, when the Golden Eagles welcome Rider to Tippin Gym for Senior Day on Sunday, February 16. That match will begin at noon.
