GREENSBURG, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles softball team earned their second conference doubleheader split in as many attempts on Sunday, falling to Seton Hill 6-0 in the early game before beating the Griffins 13-11 in a wild comeback effort in the late game. The win was Clarion's first against Seton Hill since April 20, 2021.
Â
Game 1: Seton Hill 6, Clarion 0
Â
RECAP: The Griffins kicked off the first game of the day with a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning, starting with a two-run shot by Shelby Telegdy over the fence in left field. Brooklyn Fukushima hit two solo home runs of her own, notching one apiece in the third and fifth innings to cap the Griffins' scoring at 6-0.
Â
Conversely, the Golden Eagles were unable to take advantage of their opportunities to cut into the lead. In the top of the second inning
Desi Allen hit a single to right field and
Haylie Rimmey followed with a base hit of her own, putting runners on first and third with just one out.
Kathryn O'Horo and
Annika Smith were retired to end the threat.
Â
There was a similar end to the top of the fourth inning.
Emily Buchleitner continued her charge toward the program's all-time hits record with a leadoff single and followed with a stolen base, but she was stopped on the basepaths on
Delanie Davison's grounder to shortstop. Clarion eventually loaded the bases in that inning after Rimmey lashed a single and O'Horo drew a walk, but once again the Griffins avoided danger with a popup.
Â
Game 2: Clarion 13, Seton Hill 11
Â
RECAP: This time it was Clarion who rode a strong inning early in the game to take the lead, but it was not until the fifth inning that the Golden Eagles made their mark in what turned out to be a massive comeback. Smith and
Brooke Dobson hit back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2, and a dropped third strike against
Jordy Best allowed Smith to score and put the Golden Eagles ahead.
Â
The Griffins opened up an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, recording six runs on five hits and sending 10 batters ot the plate in the process.
Â
Little did anyone know the Golden Eagles would not only top that but far outpace it, logging nine runs to retake the lead. Of the crazy stats piled up in the top of the fifth, none stood out more than the performance of
Jordy Best, who hit two home runs in the in that frame alone. The catcher led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 8-4, and she later tagged another ball over the fence to score
Alexis Valencia and make it a 12-8 advantage.
Â
In between all that was a whole lot of action for the Golden Eagles. Smith hit an RBI infield single to score
Delanie Davison, who herself hit an RBI double earlier in the inning, and Valencia cleared the bases loaded with a triple to center field that put Clarion ahead 10-8.
Â
O'Horo continued her own recent power streak, hitting a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to provide some additional insurance, and
Ashley DeWeese threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn a save and clinch the victory.
