Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls to Sioux Falls, SNHU at Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Golden Eagles softball team returned to action for the third day of THE Spring Games on Tuesday, falling in a pair of contests at Legends Way. Clarion dropped a 12-0 decision to Sioux Falls in the early game before losing 13-7 to Southern New Hampshire in the afternoon contest.

Sioux Falls 12, Clarion 0 (5 inn.)

RECAP: The Cougars did a considerable amount of damage via the long ball in the first game, hitting four solo home runs as part of a 12-run outburst in the first three innings. Jaeleigh Darnell had two of those home runs, hitting solo shots in the second and third innings. In total Sioux Falls had just eight total hits, but the Cougars also benefitted from five walks and two errors.

Clarion put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but were unable to break through onto the scoreboard. The lone Golden Eagle hit came in the top of the third inning, when Alexis Valencia beat out a grounder to shortstop for an infield hit. The junior outfielder stole second base to move into scoring position but Clarion could not bring her around.

The Golden Eagles used three different pitchers, with Ashley DeWeese proving to be the most effective. She threw a scoreless inning of relief in the fourth inning, inducing two flyouts and a groundout.

Southern New Hampshire 13, Clarion 7

RECAP: There was plenty of action on the basepaths between the Golden Eagles and the Penmen, with the teams combining for 23 hits, 13 walks and three errors. SNHU got the better of the exchange, though, largely due to a nine-run fifth inning that permanently gave them the lead.

Valencia scored the first run of the game for Clarion, with her aggressive baserunning leading to a Penmen miscue. After an infield single deep in the hole to shortstop, Jordy Best attempted to sacrifice Valencia over to second base. She got that and then some as Valencia rounded second and headed for third, forcing an errant throw that allowed her to score.

The Penmen led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Golden Eagles finally broke through with a big hit. After a one-out walk from Angelina pepe and singles from Annika Smith and Brooke Dobson, Valencia drew a walk to bring in a run and keep the bases loaded. Emily Buchleitner – who earlier this week became the 10th player in program history – smacked a double to the gap in right center field, clearing the bases and putting the Golden Eagles ahead 5-3.

It was not to last. The Penmen exploded for nine runs on six hits and two errors in the top of the fifth inning, re-establishing their lead with a 12-5 advantage. Clarion got one of those runs back in the home half of the inning, when Annika Smith scored Desi Allen with a grounder to first base, and Valencia scored in the sixth inning to close out Clarion's scoring.
