Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Wraps Week in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Golden Eagles softball team wrapped up their week at THE Spring Games on Friday, dropping a pair of games at Legends Way. Clarion lost 5-0 to Wayne State (Neb.) in the early game before dropping a 7-1 decision to Bemidji State in the late game.

Game 1: Wayne State (Neb.) 5, Clarion 0
RECAP: The first game was marked by a number of missed opportunities for the Golden Eagles, who put multiple runners in scoring position several times but failed to capitalize on those chances. The first came in the top of the first inning when Alexis Valencia led off with a talk and moved up on a wild pitch. Jordy Best followed with a walk and the two stole bases to put runners on second and third with one out. The Wildcats escaped the inning with back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Clarion stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth as well. Annika Smith led off with a single and Emma Houk followed with a base hit of her own, reaching on an infield single to put runners on first and second. Valencia advanced the pair with a grounder to second, but once again the Wildcats escaped via the strikeout.

The Golden Eagles' last solid chance to score came in the top of the sixth inning. Emily Buchleitner led off with a double to deep left field, and Malina Serrano advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt to third. Pitcher Kennadi Borngrebe got a swinging strikeout on the next at-bat to halt the rally.

Wayne State got the only runs they needed in the second inning on a two-run home run by Maddie Scobee. Borngrebe helped her own cause with a two-run double to center in the third inning.

Game 2: Bemidji State 7, Clarion 1
RECAP: The Beavers touched up the Golden Eagles for four runs in the top of the first inning, providing ample support for starter Kennedy Joachim. Joachim induced a ground ball double play in the second inning to help her cause, getting Delanie Davison to ground to shortstop and nailing Desi Allen in the process.

Clarion got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a leadoff single from Emma Houk. Brooke Dobson moved up her a base with a sac bunt to third, and Kathryn O'Horo grounded out to shortstop in the next at bat, allowing Houk to reach third base. Alexis Valencia hit an infield single to shortstop, pushing Houk across for the run. Best tried to keep the train rolling with an infield single of her own, but Buchleitner flew out to right to end the threat.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to take a bigger bite into the lead in the fourth inning. Trailing 5-1 at the time, Davison and Houk hit singles to put runners on first and second with two outs, and Dobson reached on an error at shortstop to fill the bases full of Golden Eagles. Joachim induced a popout to end the inning, and the Beavers scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-1.
