Buchleitner Breaks Record, But Softball Falls on Senior Day

CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles softball team celebrated Senior Day and a new program record on Sunday, but was unable to overcome a strong Seton Hill effort, as Clarion dropped games of 10-8 and 12-0 to the Griffins at Memorial Stadium.

Emily Buchleitner became the program's all-time leader in hits, going 2-for-2 in the first game of the day to reach 117 hits for her career. That put her past Carlie Cook, who recorded 116 career hits from 2006-11. Buchleitner tied the record in the bottom of the second inning of the first game when she pounded a ball to deep center field for a leadoff triple, and later broke the record in the fourth inning with a single up the middle.

Game 1: Seton Hill 10, Clarion 8
RECAP: Clarion nearly rallied back from a seven-run deficit in the first game, scoring five unanswered runs from the fourth inning onward to pull within a pair against the Griffins. Anna Kalkowski gave Seton Hill a 10-3 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning, representing the high water mark of the Griffins' early game advantage.

The rally started in the fourth inning after Malina Serrano's leadoff infield single, when Desi Allen drove a ball to deep left field for an RBI double. Delanie Davison brought her across with an opposite field single, and Haylie Rimmey drilled a single up the middle to score Davison and make it 10-6.

Angelina Pepe held the Griffins scoreless from the fifth inning on, setting the stage for Clarion to continue to threaten. A wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Jordy Best to score in the bottom of the sixth, and Rimmey brought Allen home with a groundout to shortstop to make it 10-8. Clarion got no closer though as the Griffins' Brianna McCombs threw a scoreless seventh for the save.

Seton Hill scored six runs in the second  inning to take the lead, but Clarion got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Buchleitner led off with a triple and then scored on Rimmey's double to deep right field. Annika Smith brought her across with a double ot the wall in left.

Game 2: Seton Hill 12, Clarion 0 (6 inn.)
RECAP: In the second game of the day the Griffins took an early lead and this time allowed no such rally, limiting the Golden Eagles to three hits over the course of six innings.

Clarion got their first baserunner in the bottom of the third inning, when Brooke Dobson lined a single to left field with two outs. She stole second to reach scoring position but Lacey Lynn struck out the next batter to keep the Golden Eagles from scoring.

The Golden Eagles had an opportunity to score later in the fourth inning, after Desi Allen hit a one-out double. Davison moved her to third base with a productive groundout to seconde base, but Bre Athey robbed Rimmey of an RBI base hit with a diving grab in center field with two outs. Alexis Valencia hit a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning to try and extend the game, but Allen grounded out on a hard shot to shortstop to end the contest.

The Griffins led 3-0 after the first inning, and Lynn helped her own cause with a two-run home run in the top of the third to make it 5-0. Brooke Cleland and Abby Smearman added two-run singles in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 12-0 game.
