Softball Drops Road DH to California (PA)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles dropped both ends of a doubleheader at California (PA) on Tuesday, falling 7-2 and 19-11 to the Vulcans at Lilley Field, the latter of which came in six innings.

California (PA) 7, Clarion 2

RECAP:  The Golden Eagles took an early lead in the first game against the Vulcans, but California (PA) responded to a first inning outburst with seven unanswered runs in the remainder of the game, including three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good.

Delanie Davison continued her hot streak in the top of the first inning, striking an RBI single to bring Alexis Valencia home to make it a 1-0 game. Likewise, Desi Allen kept the action going later in the first inning, drilling a two-out double to center field to score Davison and make it a 2-0 game. The Vulcans responded with four runs in the next two innings and held Clarion without a run the remainder of the game for the win.

Clarion's best chance to chip away was in the third inning. Allen walked and Haylie Rimmey walked with one out to put two runners one, and Kathryn O'Horo bunted the pair over for a sacrifice. Annika Smith couldn't score the pair, though, grounding out to shortstop to end the inning. Allen failed to score in the sixth inning after leadoff double, as well.

California (PA) 19, Clarion 11 (6 inn.)

RECAP:  Things could scarcely have started out any better for the Golden Eagles in the second game, as they took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Allen struck again in the doubleheader, smacking a two-run home run to score Davison and make it a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, and Annika Smith lifted a double to the gap in left center ot make it 5-0.

The Vulcans responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Golden Eagles tagged on a run in the top of the second. Jordy Best led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Emily Buchleitner brought her home with a base hit up the middle of the infield.

The Vulcans scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking an 8-6 lead in that frame. The Golden Eagles responded in the top of the fourth with runs, with Davison drilling an RBI triple and Allen following with a run-scoring double to tie the game at 8-8. Cal regained the lead with two runs on a home run by Makaylia Schlosser and then struck for five more runs in the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth on a bases-loaded three-run double by Smith, but California scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the win.
