Softball Season Ends with Doubleheader vs. Gannon

CLARION, Pa. --- The Golden Eagles softball team concluded their 2025 season on Sunday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Gannon at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Knights won decisions of 12-2 and 7-4 to sweep the twinbill.

At the conclusion of the game, it was announced that the scheduled doubleheader between Clarion and Pitt-Johnstown, originally set for April 28, had been canceled.

Game 1: Gannon 12, Clarion 2
RECAP: The Golden Knights scored five runs in the first two innings, putting up three runs in the first inning and a pair in the second to build the lead over Clarion. Pitcher Emma Hipps entered the game in the top of the third inning and stopped the bleeding for a time, throwing four straight shutout innings to get the Golden Eagles to the seventh inning.

That kept the Golden Eagles within a relatively close distance with the Golden Knights, but Clarion couldn't cash in on their opportunities. Desi Allen and Jordy Best reached second and third with one out in the bottom of the first inning, and Delanie Davison drew a walk to load the bases, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

Clarion again put a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alexis Valencia led off the inning by reaching on an error, and Desi Allen followed up with a one-out infield single. Davison bunted Allen over but Emily Buchleitner struck out to end the inning.

Gannon exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, turning their five-run lead into an advantage of a dozen. The Golden Eagles got two of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh, with Allen and Davison hitting back-to-back RBI singles.

Game 2: Gannon 7, Clarion 4
RECAP: Gannon once again jumped out to a big lead early in the game, but the Golden Eagles kept things closer in the early innings to keep the pressure on the Golden Knights. After Emma Smerick and Sadie Carroll hit a pair of extra base hits in the second to make it 4-0, the Golden Eagles got two runs back in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half.

Davison led off the inning with a walk and Annika Smith hit an infield single to shortstop, putting runners on first and second with one out. Malina Serrano drove in the first run of the game for Clarion, making it 4-1 with a single to center field, and Smith scored from third on an awkward play where Serrano collided with the shortstop Carroll on a stolen base attempt.

The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Kathryn O'Horo drew a two-out walk to extend the inning. Serrano laid down a bunt and raced down the line for an infield single to put runners on first and second and Brooke Dobson did the rest, pushing a single to right field to score O'Horo.

Gannon tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings for additional insurance, making it 7-4. Clarion got an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh after an error at shortstop.
