Quick Notes
  • The Golden Eagles return home for their first PSAC crossover game of the 2025 season on Saturday when they host Shippensburg at Al Jacks Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
  • This will be the 61st meeting between the Golden Eagles and the Red Raiders, with Clarion owning a 34-25-1 record against their former PSAC West rival.
  • Clarion improved to 2-0 last week with a 48-20 road win over West Virginia Wesleyan, a game where they held a 48-0 lead just three minutes into the third quarter.
  • Quarterback Anthony Guercio earned PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Week honors after throwing for 125 yards, rushing for 104 yards, and accounting for five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) against West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday.
  • Guercio broke into the top-five in program history in career rushing touchdowns against West Virginia Wesleyan, scoring his 20th touchdown on the ground in that game.
  • Clarion limited the Bobcats to 32 rushing yards, putting them at just 63 rushing yards allowed in the first two weeks.
  • Defensive back Eugene Hall blocked a punt against West Virginia Wesleyan to set up a touchdown, the first blocked kick of the season for the Golden Eagles' special teams units.
  • The Golden Eagles rushed for 305 yards against West Virginia Wesleyan, their first game over 300 yards since putting up 335 against Mercyhurst during the 2023 season.
  • The Golden Eagles lead the PSAC West division with an average of 5.9 yards per play, and are second in the conference with an average of 21.5 first downs per game.
  • The Clarion defense has forced the second-most third downs (26) of any team in the conference, and are allowing opponents to convert at just a 23.1 percent rate.
  • Defensive back Zay Brisbane was all over the field in the win over Wheeling on Aug. 28, making four tackles and breaking up four passes, en route to earning PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors.
  • A two-time all-conference performer and returning team captain, Griffin Buzzell is one of five Golden Eagles linebackers to earn multiple All-PSAC honors since 2000.
  • Clarion was predicted to finish seventh in the PSAC West division in 2025.
  • The Golden Eagles return 13 total starters from last year's team that went 3-8 overall with a 1-5 record in the PSAC West division. Eight of those starters are on the offensive side of the ball, including all five starters along the offensive line for the second consecutive season.

Series History

  • This will be the 61st meeting between the Golden Eagles and the Raiders, with Clarion owning a 34-25-1 record in the all-time series with Shippensburg. Unlike many PSAC opponents, Clarion did not play Shippensburg for the first time until the 1955 season, when the teams dueled to a 7-7 tie.
  • For a while the teams played annually, meeting in 50 consecutive seasons from 1958-2007. The Golden Eagles and Raiders have met only sporadically since then, though they have met in five times since 2016. The Red Raiders are 4-1 in that span.
  • That "1" came at Seth Grove Stadium, with Clarion blowing out Shippensburg 48-28 in the 2019 season opener. Mylique McGriff went off for 179 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 29-yard gallop in the fourth quarter to set the final deficit.
  • Last year's meeting in Shippensburg saw the Golden Eagles fall 24-21, in a game where Clarion recorded 551 yards of total offense but committed five costly turnovers. Anthony Guercio threw for 334 yards and rushed for 98 more, while Fred Hill made 11 tackles.
  • Clarion has not beaten Shippensburg at home since Oct. 23, 1993, a 34-32 (then divisional) win. Trailing 32-31 with 50 seconds remaining, Craig Ray and Ray Harper hit on back-to-back passes to enter Shippensburg territory, and Paul Cramer booted a 36-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to lift Clarion to the win.

Scouting the Raiders

  • Shippensburg was predicted to finish seventh in the PSAC East this season, after finishing 2-9 overall and 1-6 in East play in 2024. The Raiders return six starters on offense and seven on defense.
  • The Raiders graduated Javon Cruz, the team's lone All-PSAC honoree last season. Cruz was an All-PSAC East Second Team linebacker.
  • The Raiders opened the season last week with a 23-7 loss to Bowie State at home, in front of more than 4,000 at Seth Grove Stadium. Jaevon Parker scored the lone  touchdown for Shippensburg, cutting the home team's deficit to 13-7 before halftime.
  • Nate Myers had a big day defensively for the Red Raiders in their season opener, recording 13 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack.
  • Head coach Mark Maciejewski is in his 15th year leading the Raiders. The 2025 campaign marks his 25th season overall at his alma mater.

Guercio Named PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Week for Sept. 8

  • For the second straight week a Golden Eagle was on the PSAC weekly award list, as Clarion's Anthony Guercio earned PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Week honors for Sept. 8.
  • Guercio accounted for five touchdowns in just 33 minutes of total game action against West Virginia Wesleyan, leading the Golden Eagles to a 48-20 win over the Bobcats on the road. He finished 11 of 15 passing for 125 yards and three touchdowns, tossing two scores to Davon Jones and one to Holt Egan, and also took off for touchdown runs of 37 and nine yards - all in the first half.
  • Guercio exploded on the ground against the Bobcats, rushing for 104 yards. Clarion led the Bobcats 41-0 after the first half and were ahead 48-0 with nearly 13 minutes left in the third quarter before emptying the bench.

Climbing the List

  • With two more rushing touchdowns against West Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 4, Guercio became the fifth player in Golden Eagle history to rush for 20 touchdowns in a career. He is three rushing scores away from tying Hall of Famer Elton Brown (23) on the career rushing touchdown list.
  • Last year Guercio finished the season with 12 rushing touchdowns; if he matched that total this year, he would surpass Robert Walker (27) and Alfonso Hoggard (27) for second on the program's career rushing touchdown list.

Holt and Catch Fire

  • After putting up modest, even minimal numbers, in his first year as a Golden Eagle, Holt Egan has jumped onto the scene as a dangerous target in the Clarion passing game.
  • The senior wide receiver has six receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season, catching scoring passes against Wheeling and West Virginia.

Defense Pitches Shutout in Season Opener

  • Clarion kicked off the season with a rare feat, shutting out Wheeling 34-0 in the 2025 opener.
  • The goose egg represented the first shutout for the Clarion defense since Aug. 30, 2012, when the Golden Eagles beat Fairmont State by a 7-0 score.
  • That marked a span of 130 games between shutouts, as well as a 130-game span between shutouts at Memorial Stadium.
  • The Golden Eagles have not had a road shutout since Sept. 9, 1995 at Westminster.
  • Clarion didn't just keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard, but also from doing much of anything on offense. They limited Wheeling to 180 yards of total offense, their lowest total since permitting just 111 yards to Lincoln on Sept. 15, 2018.
  • Clarion allowed just 32 rushing yards to the Cardinals, their lowest total since giving up just 25 yards to Gannon on Sept. 23, 2023.

Brisbane Named PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week

  • Zay Brisbane was all over the field in the win over Wheeling on Aug. 28, recording four tackles and swatting away a career-high four passes.
  • Four passes defended in a single game is the best total for any Golden Eagle defender since the 1992 season.
  • For his efforts, Brisbane earned PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors for Sept. 2.
  • With three more pass break-ups against West Virginia Wesleyan, Brisbane now leads the PSAC with seven passes defended in just two weeks of action.

Coming Up Next

  • Clarion welcomes Shepherd to Al Jacks Field for a meeting over Family Weekend, on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Last year the Rams beat the Golden Eagles 27-9 in Shepherdstown, though the game was much closer than that for 59 minutes; Shepherd intercepted two passes and returned them for touchdowns with under a minute to play and just a 13-9 lead.
