CLARION, Pa. -- The Golden Eagles wrestling team hosted Buffalo for their first home dual meet of the year. The Golden Eagles came from behind down 7 points to win the match 21-16 on Friday.
The last match of the night was the match that decided the dual meet. Going into the final match, Clarion was down 16-15 with
John Meyers set to take the mat. Midway through the first period Buffalo's Magnus Bibla tried to secure a snatch single on Meyers. He then preceded to throw him to his back using his momentum as a catalyst and pinning him in an instant to give the Golden Eagles the 21-16 victory.
Travis Clawson opened the dual for the Golden Eagles at 125 pounds. Clawson got right to work starting off with a double leg takedown 13 seconds into the match. He continued his scoring with a four-point near-fall putting Buffalo's Zach Belverio in a far side cradle. To finish off the period, Clawson added four more near-fall points with an arm bar to close out the period up 11-0. Starting the 2nd period, Clawson earned a quick escape and immediately followed it up with a double leg takedown to earn the victory by technical fall 16-0 (3:10). Giving Clarion the early lead 9-0
Joey Fischer was the next man up for the Golden Eagles at 133 pounds against Buffalo's Max Elton. A quiet first period until the end when Fischer earned 1 point for a technical violation on Elton. To start the 2nd period Elton chose the down position. Late in the period Fischer was able to earn 1 point for Elton stalling and four near-fall points to increase his lead to 6-0. Fischer elected to go down to start the 3rd period and earned an escape 30 seconds in increasing his lead to 7-0 where the match would remain until the end. A riding time point added to the total gave Fischer the 8-0 major decision victory, increasing Clarion's lead to 9-0.
At 184 pounds,
Adrian Gacek was next up for the Golden Eagles. After a scoreless 1st period, Marcus Petite took the down position and earned a quick escape to start the 2nd period. Midway through the 2nd period, Gacek secured a single leg takedown to take a 3-1 lead and would spend the rest of the period on top. Gacek chose the down position to start the final period, earning a quick escape to increase his lead to 4-1. Gacek defended Petite's takedown attempts time and time again and secured the 4-1 decision victory to cut the Buffalo lead to 16-12.
At 197 pounds
Ethan Wiant took the mat for the Golden Eagles against
Connor Jacobs. The match remained scoreless after the 1st period, where Jacobs deferred his choice and Wiant chose the down position. After a scramble, Wiant was able to get himself on top of Jacobs to secure a reversal to break the scoreless tie and secure the ride out to end the period. Jacobs chose the neutral position to start the final period. Wiant secured a takedown 30 seconds into the final period to increase his lead to 5-1. He then was able to ride out Jacobs, which included several emphatic mat returns to secure a 5-0 decision victory and give the Golden Eagles a chance to steal the victory in the final match of the dual.
The Golden Eagles dropped their matches at 141 pounds and 149 pounds.
Scott Johnson battled back from an early deficit but ultimately came up short against Tyler Roark, despite two 3rd period takedowns, losing 16-11.
Oliver Fairchild dropped his match against Sam Ewing by way of major decision 13-1. Cutting Clarion's lead to 9-7.
At 157 pounds
Wesley Barnes dropped a hard-fought match to Kaleb Burgess in a 5-1 decision. At 165 pounds
Alejandro Herrera-Rondon dropped another hard-fought match 2-0 to Kelin Laffey. And at 174 pounds
Gabe Lilly lost an 11-5 decision against Rafael Knapp. Buffalo took a 16-9 lead.
