The Golden Eagles started their second matchup of the day against the Golden Flashes winning five straight matches to start the dual meet.Â
First up for the Golden Eagles at 125 pounds was
Travis Clawson. Clawson started off the scoring a minute into the 1st period, turning defense into offense, stuffing a shot from Kent State's Nico Calello and turning it into a takedown, taking a 3-0 lead. Calello bounced back with a reversal with 45 seconds remaining in the 1st period, followed by a Clawson escape. The wrestlers ended the period on their feet with Clawson leading 4-2. Clawson deferred his decision to the 3rd period and Calello chose the bottom position. Calello reversed Clawson to tie the match at 4. Clawson escaped with 36 seconds left in the period and took a one-point lead heading into the final period. Clawson chose the down position to start the final period and quickly earned an escape. In the final 20 seconds of the period, Clawson was able to secure a takedown over Calello to secure the match. They traded reversals within the final 20 seconds, and Clawson added a riding time point to a 12-6 decision victory. Putting the Golden Eagles ahead 3-0 early in the dual meet.
At 133 pounds,
Joey Fischer took the mat for the Golden Eagles against Kent State's Nick Molchak. Fischer got on the board first with a single leg takedown with 1:15 left in the 1st period. Molchak escaped with 40 seconds left in the period and the score remained 3-1 heading into the 2nd period. Molchak deferred his decision to the final period, and Fischer elected the down position. Fischer escaped within the first 30 seconds of the period, and that was all the scoring between the two wrestlers in the period. Molchak chose the down position to start the final period and earned his escape with 45 seconds remaining in the match but was unable to get a takedown to tie the match. With that 3rd period riding time added by Fischer, he secured his riding time point and a 5-2 decision victory, adding 3 points to Clarion's total and making it a 6-0 lead.
Scott Johnson looked to make it 2-0 on the day at 141 pounds for the Golden Eagles. After a scoreless first period, Johnson earned a quick escape from Landen Duncan to give himself a 1-0 lead. After not a lot of action in the period, the score remained 1-0 heading into the 3rd period. Duncan chose the down position and earned a quick escape to tie the match at 1. Less than 15 seconds later Johnson fired back with a takedown on Duncan to take the 4-1 lead. Johnson wouldn't let Duncan back up and rode him out the rest of the period, adding a riding time point to his final score. Clarion extended their lead to 9-0 after the 5-1 decision victory for
Scott Johnson.
Oliver Fairchild continued the Golden Eagles early run at 149 pounds against Silas Stits. After a scoreless first period, Stits chose the down position to start the 2nd period and earned a quick escape to take a 1-0 lead. Fairchild waited until the end of the period but took down Stits with 6 seconds to spare, taking a 3-1 lead into the final period. Fairchild chose the down position to start the final period and earned a quick escape. He then fended off Stits' takedown attempts and took home a 4-1 decision victory for the Golden Eagles. Clarion's lead increased to 12-0 after the first four matches.
Wesley Barnes once again found himself in a barn burner at 157 pounds, winning his earlier match on a reversal in the 3rd period. This time he took a 1-0 lead entering the final period. Kent State's Reese Stephen chose the down position to start the period. Barnes nearly rode him out for the entire period, just giving up the escape with 3 seconds left. He took home another 2-1 decision victory this time off a riding time advantage and was the last of 5 straight decision victories for the Golden Eagles. Clarion led 15-0 halfway through the dual meet.
The next two matches the Golden Eagles lost by tech-fall. At 165 pounds, Kent State's Chris Earnest defeated
Sawyer Ayotte 17-1 (3:43) and at 174 pounds, Ethan Barr defeated
Gabe Lilly 15-0 (7:00) cutting the Golden Eagle lead to just 5 points.Â
Adrian Gacek was next up for the Golden Eagles at 184 pounds. After a scoreless first period and an escape by Kent State's Ronald Dimmerling, Gacek entered the 3rd period down 1-0. He earned the quick escape to start the period and then secured a takedown from a high crotch shot to take his first lead of the match 4-1. Gacek rode Dimmerling out for most of the period, allowing an escape with 15 seconds left but hung on for the 5-2 decision victory adding a riding time point to his total. The Golden Eagles bounced back and extended their lead to 18-10.
At 197 pounds Kent State's Blake Schaffer won by tech-fall over Clarion's
Ethan Wiant 19-4 (6:28) cutting Clarion's lead to 18-15.Â
This result sets up an interesting circumstance to end the dual meet. If Kent State's Brentan Simmerman won the match by major decision or better, they'd take the dual meet but if they only won by decision then it would go to criteria. The first criteria for a dual meet at the collegiate level is total matches won in the dual meet. To this point Clarion had won 6 matches to Kent State's 3, which means that if the 285-pound match ended in a decision victory for Simmerman, Clarion wins the dual meet.
We now go to the 285-pound match. After a scoreless first period, the only score in the 2nd period was a Simmerman escape after he chose the down position. Meyers chose the down position to start the final period and earned a quick escape. A lot of hand fighting occurred over the next half-minute until Meyers was hit with a stall call and then taken down by Simmerman, who took a 4-1 lead. Meyers escaped before the end of the match and kept the score at 4-2 by the end of the match. Despite Simmerman coming out with the win for the Golden Flashes and tying the dual at 18, Clarion won the match based on the criteria described earlier and was awarded a point at the end of the match winning 19-18.
