PREVIEW: Wrestling Heads South to Take on Patriots

| By:
Clarion looks to get back in the win column on Friday against George Mason in Fairfax, Va. (Feb. 13). Wrestling begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Recreation Athletic Complex.

Clarion at a Glance
The Golden Eagles (6-4 overall, 3-3 in the MAC) are coming off their first dual meet loss of 2026, Edinboro snapping the team's six match win streak the last time out (Feb. 5).

Though the team's six-match run might have ended, Travis Clawson continues to roll, the 125-pounder winner of his last nine. Ranked #33 by Intermat, he's 9-1 in duals and 19-5 overall. The MAC had him at #4 in its January rankings. Adrian Gacek (184 pounds) is also hot, winning his last seven outings. He has a dual meet record of 7-3 (12-9 overall).

Joey Fischer (133 pounds) has won two straight and is 8-2 in duals (16-8 overall). Fischer was #4 in the MAC's January rankings.

Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, the MAC's fourth-ranked 165-pounder in January, is 4-3 in duals and 14-7 overall.

Other Golden Eagles with winning records are 157-pounder Wesley Barnes (14-8), 141-pounder Scott Johnson (11-7), and 174-pounder Gabe Lilly (11-10).

Clarion is 4-4 on the road.

George Mason at a Glance
The Patriots (5-6 overall, 2-4 in the MAC) have dropped their last four, most recently falling at Lock Haven, 27-14 (Feb. 1). Lock Haven beat the Golden Eagles earlier in the season (Dec. 5). George Mason's last win was a 39-6 road victory at Bloomsburg on January 16. The Golden Eagles also defeated Bloomsburg last month (Jan. 29). Both the Patriots and Golden Eagles have wins against Buffalo and Campbell, as well as losses to Edinboro and Rider.

George Mason enters the dual with a quartet of nationally ranked wrestlers – 149-pounder Kaden Cassidy (#17 Intermat/#19 Flo), 157-pounder D.J. McGee (#21 Intermat/#22 Flo), 174-pounder Logan Messer (#32 Intermat/Flo), and 184-pounder Malachi DuVall (#24 Intermat/#26 Flo). Cassidy is undefeated this season, 14-0. An NCAA qualifier a year ago, he was #2 in the MAC's January rankings.

McGee (19-2), the conference's reigning 157-pound champion, earned MAC East Wrestler of the Week honors during the first month of the season (Nov. 13). An NCAA qualifier the past two seasons, he advanced to the Round of 16 at last year's tournament. He was the conference Freshman of the Year in 2024. The MAC had him ranked #1 in January. Messer (17-6) has been named MAC East Wrestler of the Week twice this season (Nov. 18 and Feb. 3). He was ranked #3 in January by the MAC.

DuVall (19-3), the 2024 MAC 184-pound champion, is a two-time NCAA qualifier (2024, 2025). He was named MAC East Co-Wrestler of the Week just prior to the holidays (Dec. 23). DuVall was ranked #2 by the conference in January.

Also with winning records are 125-pounder Ben Monn (14-8) and 141-pounder Tate Hisey. In January, the MAC had Monn ranked #4 and Hisey #5.

Current Patriots' assistant coach Peter Papas was George Mason's first MAC champion, winning at 157 pounds in 2023.

George Mason has a winning record at home, 3-2.

Clarion vs. George Mason
The Golden Eagles lost to the Patriots last season in Tippin, 26-9 (Nov. 17). Clarion has never lost consecutive matches to George Mason. Prior to last season's loss, the Golden Eagles had won the previous three. Clarion and George Mason first wrestled on February 1, 2014, the former taking a home victory, 23-12. The Golden Eagles lead the series 7-4 and are 3-1 in away matches.

In 2018, Clarion won a shut-out George Mason in Fairfax, 48-0. Golden Eagles' assistant coach Brock Zacherl scored a second period fall in that January contest.

Clawson is 2-0 against his potential Friday opponent, Monn, beating him once this season, a sudden victory  win at the Cornell Big Red Invitational (Nov. 23). Gacek will be hoping the third time is a charm as he seeks his first victory against DuVall.
