CLARION, Pa. -- The Golden Eagles wrestling team hosted Ohio for their third home dual of the season. The Golden Eagles used early momentun to take a convincing 25-16 victory over the Bobcats.
The highlight of the match was at 165 pounds, where
Alejandro Herrera-Rondon came out for the Golden Eagles. Herrera-Rondon started the scoring early with a nasty single leg takedown to take a 3-0 lead. He then rode out Jack Lledo for the rest of the period, taking his lead into the 2
nd period. Lledo chose neutral after Herrera-Rondon chose to defer his choice to the final period. It didn't take long for him to get back on the offense, hitting a high crotch and then locking up a cradle taking Lledo to his back. Herrera-Rondon then secured the pinfall victory for the Golden Eagles, his 2
nd of the season, and increased the Golden Eagles lead to 22-4.
The Golden Eagles opened the dual with three straight bonus point victories, starting at 125 pounds with No. 33
Travis Clawson. After several shot attempts, Clawson was able to capture a last second single leg takedown to close the first period with the 3-0 lead. Ohio's Brayden Teunissen chose to defer his choice to the 3
rd period, and Clawson chose the down position. Clawson grabbed the immediate escape from Teunissen and added another point midway through the period for an illegal hands to the face call on Teunissen to take a 5-0 lead. With 40 seconds left in the period, Clawson added to his lead with a high crotch takedown and rode out Teunissen taking an 8-0 lead into the final period. Teunissen chose neutral to begin the final period and midway through the period got hit with his second stall call giving Clawson a point. The score remained the same till the end of the match, and an added riding time point gave Clawson the 10-0 major decision victory. Clarion starts with a 4-0 lead.
Joey Fischer was the next wrestler for the Golden Eagles at 133 pounds. Fischer got to work early, turning a Ryan Meek double leg shot into a takedown of his own by flipping him over, breaking the lock and then securing the takedown. Meek escaped with a minute left in the 1
st period, but Fischer wasn't done yet. He got back on the offense with a single leg shot that he finished giving him another takedown with 30 seconds left in the period. Fischer finished the period on top and then chose the down position to begin the 2
nd period. Fischer got an immediate reversal on Meek to open the period, and Meek followed up with a reversal of his own to keep it a 5-point match with a score of 8-3. Fischer escaped with 1:15 left in the period, to make it a 9-3 match where the score remained heading into the final period. Meek chose the down position to start the final period and grabbed an immediate escape to make it a 9-4 match. Midway through the period, Fischer grabbed another takedown via a single leg to increase his lead to 12-4. A late escape from Meek and a riding time point added for Fischer secured him the 13-5 major decision victory. Clarion increased their lead to 8-0 through two matches.
At 141 pounds,
Scott Johnson took the mat for the Golden Eagles. Johnson didn't take long to get started as he earned a takedown and four near-fall points in the first 30 seconds to take a quick 7-0 lead. Kolten Barker then earned a quick escape to get himself on the board, and the score remained 7-1 to the end of the 1
st period. Barker chose the down position to start the 2
nd period and then midway through the period; Johnson earned four near-fall points via a tilt to further increase his lead. Barker then had to take time for injury, but he was able to continue the match. Johnson chose down when the match resumed and got an immediate escape to take a 12-1 lead. Johnson then earned two more takedowns via go-behinds to win by an 18-2 technical fall (4:23). Clarion increased their lead to 13-0 through 3 matches.
Oliver Fairchild looked to continue the momentum for the Golden Eagles at 149 pounds. Ohio's Paul Woo got on the scoreboard first with a takedown to take the early lead. Fairchild then earned an escape point and simultaneously earned another point for a locked hands call against Woo to cut the lead to 3-2. Woo secured another takedown in the first period to make it a 6-2 match. Fairchild escaped before the end of the period but headed into the 2
nd down 6-3. Fairchild had the choice to start the period and elected the bottom position. He earned an escape quickly and now just needed a takedown to take the lead in the match. With 25 seconds left in the 2
nd period, Fairchild ran through Woo on a blast double to take the lead with a takedown. Fairchild closed out the period on top and took a 7-6 lead heading into the final period. Woo chose neutral to start the final period and needed a takedown to win the match as riding time wasn't a factor. Fairchild held strong and Woo was unable to score the takedown giving Fairchild the 7-6 come from behind decision victory. Clarion was off to a heater after ripping off 4-straight wins to start the match leading 16-0.
At 157 pounds,
Wesley Barnes dropped his match to No. 21 Derek Raike by major decision 13-4. This put Ohio on board making the score 16-4. The Golden Eagles dropped 3 matches in a row at 174, 184 and 197 pounds.
Gabe Lilly lost by tech-fall to No. 20 Garrett Thompson 15-0 (3:56).
Adrian Gacek dropped a hard-fought decision to No. 21 Sal Perrine 6-2.
Ethan Wiant was defeated by No. 24 Zayne Lehman by major decision 13-0. The Bobcats cut the lead to 22-16.
To close out the dual at 285 pounds,
John Meyers came out for the Golden Eagles. After a scoreless first period, Meyers chose the down position to earn an escape taking the lead 1-0. The score remained there until the end of the 2
nd period. Ohio's Wyatt Schmitt chose neutral to begin the 3
rd period. 30 seconds into the period, Meyers hit a snatch single leg on Schmitt and secured the takedown to take a 4-0 lead. Meyers rode out Schmitt for the remainder of the match and then earned a riding time point to win the match by a 5-0 decision. The Golden Eagles defeated the Bobcats 25-16.
