Clarion Women's Preview
Â
Last year
Joslyn Jurski became the first Golden Eagle woman since Emilee Gysegem to win two PSAC individual championships at the same meet, taking the titles in the 1000 Free and the 1650 Free. This year her best bet to claim another title might be in the 200 Free, where she enters the meet with the conference's top time of 1:52.74. She checks into the top-four on the psych sheet in three other events, the 500 Free (3
rd – 5:03.47), the 1650 Free (4
th – 17:36.67) and the 1000 Free (4
th – 10:35.28). The 500 Free time ranks was an NCAA B cut.
Â
Jurski was also a key component on the 800 Free Relay team, anchoring the quartet of
Amanda Fetsko,
Madelynn McTeer and
Elli Knausz. That group recorded a time of 7:34.42 at the Zippy Invite in December, the best time on the psych sheet in the PSAC and one that could put that group in contention for an NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships berth.
Â
Fetsko also has an NCAA B cut to her credit. She turned in a time of 51.94 in the 100 Free at the Zippy Invite in December.
Â
Overall, the Golden Eagle women will be driven by solid depth across the board, with other potential contenders in a handful of events.
Rachael Hess enters the 100 Fly with the second-best time in the conference (57.15), just four-hundredths of a second behind IUP's Gem Crittenden, while Knausz should compete near the top in both IM events.
Â
Clarion Men's Preview
Â
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles on the men's side is senior
Dominic Cortopassi, the reigning PSAC champion in the 100 Fly. This year his focus has shifted to other events but the results have been as good if not better; Cortopassi enters the meet with the best times in the PSAC in the 200 Free (1:38.85), the 100 Breast (54.78) and the 200 Breast (1:59.62).
Â
Of note, Cortopassi's 200 Breast time currently sits 25
th in the nation entering this weekend; should he find a way to improve on that time by even a half-second, he would find himself firmly in contention for a spot at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships in March.
Â
One senior looking to hang a pelt on the wall is
Gavin Guckavan. A multiple-time All-PSAC performer, Guckavan currently owns the fastest time in the PSAC in the 50 Free, with his time of 20.46 one-hundredth of a second faster than West Chester's Till Schroeder. Guckavan also ranks second to Cortopassi in the 100 Breast (54.99), giving the Golden Eagles a potential 1-2 punch at the top of that event, and third in the 200 Breast (2:01.45) behind Cortopassi and Gannon's Aidar Sataev.
Â
Guckavan is also a member of the Golden Eagles' 200 Free Relay (1:22.91) unit that ranks in a dead heat with Gannon – also at 1:22.91 – for the fastest in the conference.
Mason Irwin,
Mason Peck and
Jacob Rider comprise the other three legs of that relay. The 400 Medley Relay (3:17.42) team of Rider, Guckavan, Cortopassi and Peck clock in just ahead of the Golden Knights, giving Clarion two potentially strong relay offerings.
Â
Speaking of Rider, the freshman will head to his first conference meet with his own top time. He posted the best time in the PSAC in the 200 Back with a mark of 1:48.87, clocking in a quarter-second faster than West Chester's Bartosz Brzozowski.
