SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Golden Eagles softball team faced a challenging doubleheader to kick off PSAC play on Friday, falling to Slippery Rock at Kasnevich Field by scores of 11–3 and 18–9.
Game 1: Slippery Rock 11, Clarion 3 (5 inn.)
In the first game, Slippery Rock gained momentum in the bottom of the third, breaking a 2–2 tie with a powerful four-run drive. A standout moment came when Aubrey Mansfield tripled to left center, bringing in two runs, followed by a sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Grace Smith, moving the score to 6–2. This sequence put the Golden Eagles on their heels, and they couldn't regain their footing.
Clarion set an early tone in the first inning with a double from
Brooke Dobson, followed by walks to
Sami Springman and Medrano, loading the bases.
Jordy Best capitalized with an RBI single, and
Emily Buchleitner added a sacrifice fly to give Clarion a 2–0 lead. However, offensive opportunities diminished after that, with the team unable to take advantage of base runners in the third inning.
In the fifth,
Alexis Valencia provided a spark with an inside-the-park home run - her second of the season - but the rally was short-lived as The Rock answered back with five runs, including a three-run homer from Maddie Cavenaugh, sealing the game at 11–3. The decisive bursts from Slippery Rock in the third and fifth innings were too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome.
Valencia recorded a home run, driving in one run during her three at-bats. Dobson added a double and scored a run, collecting one hit in her appearances. Best contributed one hit and one RBI, alongside stealing a base during her time on the field.
Game 2: Slippery Rock 18, Clarion 9 (6 inn.)
In the second game, the Golden Eagles (6-10, 0-2 PSAC-W) faced a tough outing against Slippery Rock (8-8, 2-0 PSAC-W), falling 18–9. Despite the loss, Clarion's offense fought hard with nine hits, including a home run and three doubles.
Slippery Rock's sixth inning turned the tide, taking advantage of key Golden Eagles' errors and clutch hits to extend their lead. A fielding error paved the way for Addie Deal's double, placing runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly by A. Mansfield and a two-run homer by Alyssa Sheely rounded out a five-run inning, pushing Slippery Rock further ahead.
The Golden Eagles showed grit earlier in the game. In the second inning,
Delanie Davison smashed a two-run homer after
Jordy Best's stolen base scored the inning's first run. In the fourth,
Sabi Medrano doubled to drive in a run and later scored on a wild pitch, trimming the gap to four. However, the momentum shifted as Clarion's bats fell silent late, unable to keep pace with Slippery Rock's offense.
Jordy Best was a spark for the Golden Eagles, scoring two runs and adding an RBI. Davison showcased her power with a home run and two RBIs. Medrano contributed a double, scoring once and driving in another, proving her clutch capabilities. Sophie Petrash added depth with two doubles and a run, boosting the lineup with her extra-base hits.
