The following procedures must be followed in order to expedite payment of your medical bills. Medical bills are your responsibility, regardless of scholarship status. Failure to follow these procedures will result in delays of payment and may adversely affect your credit rating. Also, if your personal medical insurance is for some reason terminated throughout the academic year it is your responsibility to notify the Sports Medicine Department of this change in status. This institution, and the athletic department, shall not be responsible for any charges incurred due to examination and/or treatment if these procedures are not followed.

Only injuries, including injuries to the mouth or to sound, natural teeth, which are directly related to your sport, which occur during practice, games or meets or in travel to and from these sanctioned activities are covered by Clarion's accident insurance carrier. In those sports where protective devices (mouthpieces) are mandatory and provided for use in official practice sessions and games, the Athletic Accident Policy will assume responsibility only if the protective device is worn by the athlete in accordance with the guidelines set by the manufacturer. Diseases or illnesses are not covered in any case, as they are not directly related to your participation. We would strongly suggest that if the athlete does not have an insurance policy that covers disease or illness that they look into purchasing the student health insurance offered by the university. Information can be obtained by contacting the Office of Student Affairs, Clarion Campus 814-393-2351.Â
The athlete is responsible to report all injuries to the Certified Athletic Training staff as soon as possible. The Athletic Training Staff will make all of the necessary medical referrals as indicated. In the event of an emergency due to an athletic injury, the athlete will be transported to a hospital or medical facility. The athlete will at no time seek outside medical attention for an athletic related injury without prior consultation from either the athletic trainer or the attending physician except in the case of an emergency.Â
All medical bills must first be submitted to your personal medical insurance company and payment made, or denial established. This is most generally (but not in every case) done as a service of the medical provider. It is your responsibility to determine the procedures of the provider. After payment, whether partial or full has been made by your insurance company, or denial established, balances due will be paid by the University Accident Policy. To submit outstanding bills to the university for payment they must be accompanied by:
- The Explanation of Benefits sheet (EOB) provided by your insurance company. This is an explanation of what your company either did or did not pay.
- An itemized bill of the outstanding charges from the doctor or provider of medical services. An original if possible would be appreciated.Â
If the athlete or parent/guardian receive a medical bill for an injury that has not been submitted to your personal insurance company, you must immediately make sure the doctor or provider of medical services to your son or daughter has your complete personal insurance information. Then make arrangements with the provider as to whether they will submit the bills or whether it is your responsibility to do so.Â
It is the intent of Clarion Athletics that the athletes and their parents not be financially responsible for medical charges stemming from an injury covered by our Athletic Insurance Policy. However, the preceding policies and procedures must be followed exactly, as stipulated by our insurance company in order to achieve this goal. Please keep this sheet in your records so that you can refer to it in the unfortunate event that we have to submit a claim on your son or daughter.
If you have any questions about these policies and procedures, please do not hesitate to contact the Clarion Athletics Office of Sports Medicine at 814-393-2102.Â
