Marcus Spencer enters his second season on the Golden Eagle coaching staff in 2020, working as Clarion's defensive backs coach. Before coming to Clarion in 2019, Spencer a season as the passing game coordinator and secondary coach for Seton Hill.
Before making his way to Seton Hill, Spencer spent much of the previous decade working as a high school coach as well as a certified personal trainer. He helped coach Fenwick High School of the Catholic League Chicago to the Illinois state semifinals, and before that aided De La Salle High School to the Catholic League Chicago first round playoffs in 2015. Throughout his time in Chicago Spencer worked as a certified personal trainer at the University Club of Chicago, from 2015-18.
As far as college coaching experience, Spencer’s career started as a volunteer assistant defensive backs coach at Alabama in 2002, and he coached for Tim Horton’s Youth Football Camps from 2002-04. That led to his first high school coaching job, as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for Sumter County High from 2005-08. Spencer went on to be an assistant coach for defensive backs for the NAIA’s Bethel University.
Spencer played professional football immediately after his college days, signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2001 before moving on to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2002. He stayed with the Tiger-Cats through 2004 and was a finalist for the CFL Special Teams Player of the Year before embarking on his coaching career, though he returned to professional football in 2009 with the Odessa Roughnecks of the Indoor Football League (IFL). He also spent a year with the Cincinnati Commandos Continental Indoor Football League, helping them to a team title in 2011.
Spencer was a walk-on at Alabama from 1997-2001, eventually earning a full scholarship before the end of his college career. A two-time winner of the “Bear” Bryant Oustanding Non-Scholarship Award, he helped the Crimson Tide to a 34-7 win in the 1999 SEC Championship game, including a second quarter interception that led to the go-ahead touchdown before the end of the half. He finished his career with 45 games played and 11 interceptions, including a career-high four in 1998, and earned a spot on the All-SEC Academic Honor team.
Spencer graduated from Alabama in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Computer Software Programming: Languages Web/Programming. He earned his ACE Personal Trainer Certification in September 2013.
