Millersville Defeats Clarion 13-10 In Overtime

CLARION, PA: Millersville's Sean Hughes booted a 40-yard field goal in overtime to lead the Marauders to a 13-10 overtime win over Clarion at Memorial Stadium Saturday night in front of a Family Day crowd of 5,834.

Clarion's Mark Hofmeister attempted a 52-yard field goal prior to Hughes' game-winning kick and it was blocked by Marauder defensive end Lynn Fortney.

The win boosted Millersville to 2-0 overall, while the loss dropped Clarion to 0-2.

Millersville opened the scoring in the first quarter when qb Omar Sanders ran 56 yards to paydirt. Hughes PAT gave Millersville a 7-0 lead with 12:33 left in the first.

Clarion tied the score in the third quarter when Pierre Odom grabbed a wide receiver screen from qb Felton Woulard and turned the play into a 63-yard touchdown. Hofmeister's PAT tied the game 7-7 with 10:12 remaining in the third.

Millersville took a 10-7 advantage when Hughes kicked a 39-yard field with 13:12 left in the game.

Clarion noseguard Troy Bowers tackled MU's Sanders late in the fourth quarter and caused a fumble that linebacker Matt Morris recovered at the Millersville 23. Hofmeister came on four plays later and booted a 42-yard field goal to tie the game 10-10 with only 6:16 remaining.

Clarion outgained Millersville 275-241, posted a 15-10 advantage in first downs and also had a time of possession advantage of 34:33 to 25:17, but nine Clarion fumbles, inluding four that were recovered by Millersville, stopped three Clarion drives inside the MU 35, including one fumble lost at the Marauder 8.

Clarion qb Felton Woulard, making his first collegiate start, ran for 133 yards on 32 carries, and completed 3 of 7 passes for 81 yards and 1 td, before he left the game with an injury after the game tying field goal. Odom had two catches for 72 yards and 1 td.

Sanders meanwhile led Millersville with 105 rushing yards and 1 td on 20 carries, plus completed 5 of 18 passes for 26 yards.

Clarion's Troy Bowers led the "D" with 11 tackles, 3 tfl's, 2 sacks amd 1 forced fumble.

Millesville's Braden Steffy had 12 tackles, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery to lead Millersville.

Clarion travels to Glenville State (WV) next Saturday, while Millersville travels to Bowie State.
