KUTZTOWN EDGES CLARION 20-19

(CLARION, PA): Kutztown's Jeremy Copeland tossed two touchdown passes and placekicker Matt Scartozzi booted two field goals, while Clarion missed the game tying PAT as Kutztown edged Clarion 20-19 on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

Kutztown raised its overall record to 3-1 and Clarion dropped to 1-3.

Clarion drove 79-yards in 10 plays and scored on a Brandon Sweeney two-yard run with 10:57 to play, but Mark Hofmeister's PAT was wide right and Kutztown held on for its 20-19 victory.

Clarion opened the scoring in the first quarter following Bo Busch's interception of a Copeland pass that gave Clairon the ball on the Kutztown 24. Marcus Lowe scored on an 8-yard run with 2:40 left in the first and Clarion led 7-0.

Kutztown recovered a Clarion fumble at the Golden Eagle 31 and scored on its first play when Copeland hit Trevor Smith on the touchdown pass to tie the game 7-7 at 2:40 of the first quarter.

The Golden Bears took a 14-7 lead when Copeland completed a 77-yard td pass to Smith at 7:13 of the second quarter.

Clarion came back late in the second quarter and drove 48 yards in 6 plays to score its second touchdown on a Brandon Sweeney 7 yard run. Hofmeister's PAT attempt failed and Clarion trailed 14-13 with 1:13 left before halftime.

Kutztown's Matt Scartozzi booted a 32-yard field goal with 3:53 left in thethird quarter, then came back and booted a 37-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the third to give Kutztown a 20-13 lead.

Clarion fumbled the ball a costly eight times in the game, losing six, including three inside the Kutztown 33 yard line.

Clarion also won the statistical battle, outgaining Kutztown 449-216 in total offense. Clarion had 317 rushing yards and 132 passing yards for its 449 total. Brandon Sweeney gained 96 yards and 2 td's on 12 carries, while qb Felton Woulard rushed for 89 yards on 24 carries and completed 7 of 16 aerials for 132 yards. Wideout Ron Rivage grabbed four passes for 102 yards.

Kutztown had 216 yards including only 22 rushing and 194 passing. Copeland completed 10 of 26 passes for 194 yards and 2 td's. Running back Tony Bria had 27 carries for 61 yards, but Copeland was sacked three times.

Clarion All-America noseguard Troy Bowers led the defense with 9 tackles, 1 sack and 4 tfl's.

Garrett Livingston made 13 stops and had 1 fumble recovery for Kutztown.

Clarion returns to Memorial Stadium next Saturday to host IUP in the annual Homecoming Game at 2pm. Kuztown returns home to host West Chester.
